Has anyone used LeapFrog software with special needs children?? If you could you give me some feedback?

I am a Senior Spec Ed Major. I am currently working on an Action Research Project for my teaching reading class. I am interested in learning about the benefits of implementing LeapFrog technology into the classroom in order to teach children with special needs how to read.

If you or anyone you know has used LeapFrog technology in the classroom, would you please comment on your experiences and whether or not you think that LeapFrog technology is a good investment for teaching reading practices to children with special needs.

Thank you

Mary

I believe there are plenty more professional/effective software choices you could purchase than leapfrog.
Leapfrog only goes so far, and this is something parents already have at home in most cases. Many of the games can be frustrating for special needs, the programs often have a timer which is not adjustable, and if the student doesn't go quickly, there are often cues (sound and visual) that the student "missed". Many special needs need additional time and motivation/encouragement to learn, and I think that many of these games will be frustrating for them.
I'd find something more suitable and appropriate for a classroom environment, with adjustable settings.
In a nutshell : Leapfrog - OK for home, not appropriate as part of a curriculum for school.

Do you know the TV commercial I'm thinking about? Help!!?

So my nephew's birthday is coming up and I want to get him something the would benefit him in the long run.

I saw an infomercial on TV for some sort of reading DVDs and/or software that helped a child read even if the child was only 5 months old.

The way the program works: The child sees the word "CLAP" and then associates the word "CLAP" with the action of clapping.

Does anybody know what this program was called?

its "your baby can read"

Is there software for dyslexic adults?

Hi All,

Does anyone know of any software for dyslexic adults? I am a grad student with dyslexia and have a lot of trouble with reading. All the software I have come across is geared towards children and I'd like something made specifically for adults.

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance!!

Hi have dyslexia too, and have a little experience with Texthelp Read & Write Gold program, and waiting for a program to be installed on to my computer, this program will convert Speech to text, and Spell Check, Homophones, Word Prediction, Web Highlighting, Daisy Reader, Dictionary, Word Wizard, Scanning, Screenshot Reader, Study Skills Toolbar, Calculator, Speech Maker, Pronunciation Tutor, Research Tools.

I have had a fair bit of trouble reading over the last few months, and being able to scan in books and notes I had to read, on to my computer or a disk, then highlight the area I want read, and the program will read it to me.

My daughter who is also dyslexic likes Dragon Naturally speaking, when she used it there was a few problems with the voice to text, but I believe this has been fixed with the new version. I think they have similar things as the Texthelp.

I know that with both you can purchase a PC or Mac version. Unfortunately they do cost a bit, will be invaluable while studying, as well as when as work and home. So I can't wait for mine to come.

Just make sure that you have the system requirements to install the program, before purchasing.

Can someone summaries this article for me plz?

Computers are ubiquitous. As computers have become less expensive they have been purchased by more and more families for their homes. Because of this, many children begin to use computers at an early age. Even if computers are not available in their home, children almost certainly will begin to come into contact with computers in school.
Some adults are amazed by how readily young children use computers. Many children find that using computers gives them a sense of power and accomplishment. And, unlike many adults whose first or primary contact with computers is work related, most children first use computers for entertainment purposes and games. This is by no means the only use that children have for computers. Children also use computers for accessing information, as well as for writing stories and research papers.

In addition, children use a variety of learning programs, which either seek to teach or reinforce basic skills in math, language, reading, and other subjects. Other software allows children to draw pictures or create visual works of art and self-expression. Communication with others is growing as an application of computers by children, particularly as more homes and schools gain access to the Internet. As computers continue to become more powerful, increasing numbers of children are using computers to create multimedia presentations and even web sites that include pictures, text, audio, and even video.

Because computer use is promoted in schools, and because computers are so ubiquitous, children have a great deal of exposure to them. Not everyone, however, is comfortable with the use of computers by young children. Some, including the Alliance for Childhood, have called for a halt to the use of computers by young children. Such groups cite the costs as well as possible health effects that using computers may have on children. The true impact that early computer use has on children is uncertain. Even though there is not enough information to state authoritatively that computers have any negative effects on children, the possible adverse effects that have been cited are serious enough to warrant consideration

Computers are everywhere. They're less expensive so have been bought for more homes. kids are using them at an earlier age, even if they don't have one at home as they can use them at school.

Adults are amazed by young kids' computer literacy - this can give children a sense of power and accomplishment and they use computers for fun rather than work, as the adult community do.

Children can use computer programs to learn or improve basic skills: academic, reading or artistic. They can communicate easily, aided by the growing use of internet in homes and schools. Computers are becoming more powerful, allowing children to access presentations, pictures, text and audio.

Because ocmputers are everywhere, and are promoted at school, kids are constantly exposed to them but not everyone is happy about this. The Alliance for Childhood want to stop kids using computers, partly because of the costs and the health effects that it can cause. It's uncertain what effect computers have on children, but even though there isn't enough information about it yet, the possibility of negative effects are serious enough to put children's computer use under consideration.

    Computer Games Good For Kids

A study conducted in the U.K. found that primary school children improve their math scores and concentration levels by playing online educational games, according to an article released in the BBC last month. Thirty primary school children between the ages of nine and ten, played a game called “Dr. Kawashima’s More Brain Training” game every morning for about 15 minutes before their lessons started. The game consists of several mini-games including reading tests, number challenges, memory puzzles and problem-solving exercises. At the end of the study, the children were tested in math and the results compared to a control group. Children who had played the games increased their test scores by more points than those who did not play, even though the test scores for both groups increased.
