Reading Magnifier Glasses

i like to read and after reading maybe 2 or 3 pages my eyes start to hurt, i have perfect vision but find that when i read i sometimes struggle to read larger words (ie. the letters seem to be squished together on bigger words) should i get magnifier glasses, are they bad for your eyes if u dont were or need glasses,. im 17

means you have long distance vision or far sited vision. You see small things but bigger things may be blury.

It has become such a nusiance to FIND them all the time. Would laser surgery help me?

No, lasik won't help that.

There is a new procedure undergoing FDA testing now that will correct your problem once it's approved in a few years.
(You can have the procedure done in Canada now though)

Okay, im wondering if this is just straining of the eyes or if i just need glasses/reading glasses:

I was reading something on the internet when all the letters started to get a little closer together. and i couldn't concentrate on one word. So, i squinted. It worked a little bit. So then, when i thought it was just the computer, i printed the thing out. just to make sure it wasn't the computer. so when i took it out, it was even worse! then i was walking around the house and the edges of things were a little blurry. and i couldn't concentrate on one thing. It felt like my eyes kept relaxing over and over and i couldn't keep my eyesight straight.
right now im wearing some eye magnifiers and i guess it's working a little. But just making sure for those who have had these symptoms, do i need reading glasses/glasses? or are my eyes just straining!?

You need to get your eyes checked. Sounds like you might just be overtired, but you could also finally be at the stage that you need glasses. Only your eye doctor can tell for sure. I wouldn't wear the magnifiers until the doctor checked to see if that is what you need.

how close can you see?
Now that i am over 40, I can still see perfectly at a distance, but I cant read small stuff up close without magnifiers
It's kind of funny, My freind at work is just the opposite, He cant read the road signs, or see much of anything at a distance, but he can read the small print of the manuals and schematics that we use, So I drive and he reads the instructions and does the soldering, It all works out!

Before I answer your question it is important to get some terminology right.

Farsighted = Hyperopia.
Nearsighted = Myopia

People can generally have either myopia or hyperopia. After age 40 "PRESBYOPIA" sets in. That is, the near vision becomes difficult. This happens beacuse the eye loses its capacity to increase the lens power for focussing at objects held close to the eye. This loss of accommodation happens to everyone and is a fact of life - a byproduct of aging. This is true for both Hyperopia and Mypoia if you try to read through your distance vision glasses.

Both you and your friend have PRESBYOPIA.

You can see distance vision clearly without glasses. Therefore when you read upclose, because your ability to accommodate has been lost (PRESBYOPIA), you will now need reading glasses. Drug store glasses - about +1.25 D may be fine initially. By age 45 or more, you may need upto +2.50 D.

Your friend is nearsighted i.e he has myopia. With glasses he can see distance vision clearly. However, if he were to read upclose without removing his distance vision glasses, he too will have trouble reading upclose, just like you. He too has Presbyopia. The difference is that he can remove his distance vision glasses and then his nearsightedness will allow him to read upclose. So he will not need reading glasses if he reads upclose without his distance vision glasses.

I have had better than 20/20 vision my entire life, but just recently when I am reading very small teeny tiny type (like on a children's medicine bottle), I have a very hard time reading it. I went to the store and looked thru the "find your reading glass strength" window to view text but I was able to read everything thru the window clearly, so it seems that I don't need those glasses. We don't have vision benefits so I'd be cash for my doctor's visit. If I don't get glasses, can my vision worsen? Right now I can use a little magnifier if I really need to read tiny text.

No your vision can't get worse by not wearing glasses. The only problem is (as you noticed)...you can't read as well and might feel eye-fatigue/get headaches after prolonged reading.

My dad has 20/15 vision (for seeing far away) but still requires reading glasses so being far-sided (can't see up close) has nothing to do with being near-sided (can't see far away)...and vice versa I can read size 2 font that's been printed out but still require glasses to see far away.

I suggest you take the medicine bottle with you to a Walgreens (or equivalent) and try on various generic, over the counter reading glasses and see which power makes it clear again. Keep in mind that these "cheap" glasses are likely to break and may not be your exact prescription. Oh FYI, lenses that correct for far-sidedness are basically magnifying glasses (convex lenses).
