Looking for software to teach sight reading at the piano.?

We just bought Guitar Hero for the kids and I'm fascinated with how it teaches music. I just wish it included a representation of actual music notation along with the rest of its notation.

I would love to turn it sideways, add another staff, use actual notes, complete with actual durations the way Guitar Hero does, and be able to control the speed for practicing. I've been out of school for a long time. My synthesizer in college had actual patch cords that I had to document and map, so I'm WAY out of the loop.

I have to think that there are some good products out there. All of my Internet searches have yielded software that's too simple. Any guidance would be appreciated.

There is no substitute to develop sight reading skills at the piano. Even with technology, the most efficient and best way is to be practiced at the piano.

Sight reading is a skill that takes time and the whole concept of sight reading is testing how well you read. If your children aren't reading at the piano enough, they will not develop the skill. Every says that they are reading because they have music in front of them but to the contrary, most kids don't read music. They don't read it properly because they spend too much time looking down at the keys. They read one note then look down and try to find it, then look up, read another note and repeat the process of looking down.

To read efficiently, one has to keep their eyes on the music and not on the keyboard. This way the music is played in time. Every time you look down, you hesitate and create a pause in the musical line. This in turn does not allow you to read horizontally and teach yourself that music moves from left to right.

The best way to practice this is to watch your kids practice and remind them to never look down. You can hold a book over their hands so even when they look down they see nothing. Kids need to learn the geography of the keyboard. Without this, sight reading will not work because they are always searching for the note to play.

Practice reading with the metronome so that they have a steady pulse, or even better read along with them and you cannot stop. Make your children read up to your pace and force them to keep going. This will teach them to drop notes and keep on track. The most important thing about sight reading is not to slow down or stop for mistakes, instead read ahead and keep going.

Sight reading is a skill that demonstrates how well one can read music. This is often ignored because we all assume we read because we play the instrument, however, the efficiency and fluency is not there for most. In truth, very few students read well and that is demonstrated on sight reading. Sight reading is not a skill all on its own, it is not it's own entity. It is a fundamental skill that is tested on your own reading proficiency.

Is there some software to view midi data as sheet music easily in real-time? Not Sibelius or its counter?

I need to practice my sight reading but... I want to view it in real time aka no rhythm or markings JUST the notes themselves as I strike them. I've seen this exact thing on some beginners Yamaha keyboards but... They don't have 88 keys!

I take it that Sibelius and/or Finale are too expensive. (Sib. student edition is $99 .... and so well worth the money)

Is there a piano keyboard that I can hook up to my computer and use it for a program to learn certain songs?

I want to learn a few songs, but I'm not very good at reading sheet music and sight reading. So is there a piano keyboard I can hook up to my computer to wear I can use it on a specific software that'll help me learn those songs?

Yes, there is, you can find one by using the search engine on your computer. ~

What is the best sight reading piano book available now, Any that teaches how to sight read intervals?

I am really bad at sight reading and am looking for a book that will help me improve because my sight reading is almost non existent

It takes me forever to get through a sheet of music and i end up having to rely on remembering the pattern of where my fingers move on the piano

I was looking for a software at first but most of them need a Keyboard and i don't have one. So looking for a good book that starts at beginner and works up. I really need something that will help build confidence and is easy to understand.

Also would be great if book teaches how to sight read intervals : ).

It will also help ALOT if i can get a torrent to download the book but if not that's ok just let me know of the best working sight reading piano books out there : )
