Do you know of any quality software for kids that involves language arts?

It should involve reading, but not learning how to read.
It can be for any grade 3-9.

Here's a list of language art for kids between 2-5.

Can someone recommend a software for speed reading????

Have 2 grade school kids and would like them to improve in their academic studies. Also, I planning to attend school in the fall, and would like to stay on tops of my studies too. Do anyone know of a software for speed reading.

Thanks

No speed reading course has ever been proven to be effective, despite thier claims that someone can read at 500-1000 words per minute.

When you read faster, your comprehension of the material will suffer.

Try a google search on the effectiveness of speed reading or reading comprehension studies and steer clear of the websites that are selling a speed reading technique.

In short, if speed reading was actually effective and improved reading comprehension, then it would have been taught in grade school.

How does the reading program Success For All help to identify kids with reading disorders?

My son is a freshman recently diagnosed as ADD with a reading disorder. Trouble started in the fourth grade and the only "help" from the teachers, admin and DOE is to tell us that our son is lazy and unmotivated. Have started OG tutoring and am looking into Kurzweil software . How could Success For All have left my child so far behind?
His tutor has placed his language and comprehension at 5th grade 5th month.

Thats what makes Success For All so unique. My nephew was also diagnosed with ADD and had a reading disorder too..I dont know how they did it but he is now No 1 in his class. Just believe in their program:) If you have any questions, maybe they can answer that for you:)

What is the cheapest and simplest way to record my kid reading a storybook and then make an audio CD of it?

I like to know what are the minimum equipment I need and the rough cost estimate to purchase the equipment. It would be best if the recording equipment setup is portable and can be carried to different locations. Also I need to know what is the software needed to transfer the recording onto the CDs. Thanks a bunch!

There are lots of ways of doing this. A micro cassette recorder would do the trick, or a small dictaphone. Usually the output is 1/8" (or headphone jack) and can be plugged into the mic or line input on your computer. Depending on the length of the audio, you could use Windows Sound Recorder or something like Cool Edit Pro is pretty straight forward. Play back the audio and record into a program of your choice. Burn the wave file to CD with any CD burning program. ie Nero, Windows Media Player, etc.

What is wrong with current child blocking/filtering software?

I have taken a look at the current Internet blocking and filtering software and read a variety of posts on protecting kids online. While I agree education and common sense is the best recipe, are there any major issues with the current solutions in the marketplace? Is there some big, glaring feature that software like NetNanny and CyberSitter don't address or do well?

1 - Children despise those programs
2 - Children can usually find a way to bypass those programs

I'm speaking about these programs in general, some programs may be more secure, etc.
