What is causing low diastolic blood pressure and other symptoms and can I do anything?

I have been feeling very tired and week. I constantly need to lie down during day. I sleep for hours at night and still can't get up. I borrowed a blood pressure checking device and made notes of my bp each day. My diastolic BP is rarely above the 50s. I can have BP for the systolic reading at normal levels but diastolic always low and in mornings it all is low. I have bad visual disturbances but I have had my eyes checked and are ok. I feel sometimes as though I just can't focus and feel not with it at all. Yet, my vision gets really poor and washed out. I wonder what is going on. I had general health checks done and they are ok. No one has monitored my BP though until I used this machine as I just want to understand why I am nearly falling asleep at the wheel of my car some days. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I am late 30s, male. I went through a lot of family stress over last few years. I started to put on weight even though I am not a big eater (was 81kg and now hovers at100kg) and lose a bit and put back on quickly with no great variation in diet.......I look very puffy in mornings and eyelids are constantly swollen. I was studying at uni this year but nothing I can think of that must be making me feel this way long term.
last 3 years but it has been bad lately. I fall asleep in chairs in middle of day and when I wake up room is flickering like mad and that takes awhile to subside.

Blood pressure varies from person to person and also during the day. Some people have a diastolic blood pressure on the lower side and it is perfectly normal. A diastolic blood pressure of 50 is fine as long as you do not have lightheadedness or dizziness. The other symptoms you are describing are unlikely to be related to the diastolic blood pressure. The visual symptoms you are describing are not related to a low diastolic pressure. Falling asleep while driving is unlikely to be related to your blood pressure, but certainly should be investigated. Make sure you are getting enough restful sleep. You may also be evaluated for sleep apnea, because daytime drowsiness is a sign of this. You should see your doctor about this. The other symptoms are minor, but falling asleep while driving is dangerous to you and others on the road. Good luck.

How do you prevent cancer?

Hello,

I am just kind of wondering, if cancer is common in your family, how can your doctors monitor your symptoms and make sure you aren't developing anything dangerous?

I have been dealing with:

Severe Chronic Fatigue (some days I cry thinking of getting out of bed because my body is so wiped out I can barely move)
Chronic Sinus Infections (about once a month)
Chronic Ear Infections (about 3 times a year)
Chronic Bronchitis (about 4 times a year)
Chronic GI problems ( had appendix and gallbladder removed within six months of each other August 08- March 2009)
Dizziness & Tachycardia (If I go up a flight of stairs and check my pulse it's usually at about 115 and will stay that way pounding and racing for about 20 minutes. I got on an elliptical machine and it said my heart rate was 175 right at the beginning of the work-out and I had to get off the machine)
Depression/Anxiety
Ovarian Cysts
Blood Pressure Problems
Joint Pain
Knee Condition and Flat Feet
Very poor gag reflex
Fevers (Chronic. Low grade fever almost every night 99.5-100 when my temp used to be 96.9 every day by nature)
Chills
Vision Problems
Seizure like symptoms (staring spells and paralysis attacks)
Fainting Spells
Chronic Kidney Infections and UTIs

Now, leukemia and other cancers are in my family history. (My great-grandma and grandma on my dad's side both died of leukemia at the age of 52 which my doctor says was a pure coincidence and my great grandpa on my mom's side had it as well) Breast cancer, thryoid cancer, and skin cancer (grandpa on mom's side)...

Now with all of that said...my doctor awhile back said "oh, with all your problems we should keep an eye on your blood test results" but never followed up with that...how can I hold them to their word?

I have a cardiologist, endocrinologist, autonomic specialist, gastroenterologist, urologist, gynecologist, neurologist, and a therapist...but I can't get everyone on the same page! How the heck would I? lol. There's too many of them and all they ever do are stupid tests! I've had so many tests on me, I worry about radiation (over 15 CT scans in the past year)

I want to stop seeing ALL of these doctors as I'm not sure what they're even doing for me as I'm still ALWAYS sick!! My fiance and her family are really worried because every month I end up in bed with a fever and vomiting or something...

I'm starting a new regimen, and adding a new vitamin to the pills I already take and even more water (I drink a lot already), I'm doing more exercise although I have to be careful not to do much cardio with my heart-rate.

The worst part is I am only TWENTY THREE years old!! I feel like I'm falling apart.

Help me please?! I need to know how I can monitor this with my doctors and how to rebuild my immune system!! :(

(Oh and on a side note- my doctor said to me that I have a slightly low platelet count. What does that mean?)

Thanks for reading this...and sorry if it's too long!

OMG hon you do sound as though you are having a rough time of it.
Being honest I think that Cancer is something to put on the back burner at the moment and get yourself sorted out for the problems that you are experiencing right now!
There is no way to prevent cancer but a low platelet count can be from an infection unless it is continuous and seriously low it's not something to worry over.
Since you seem to have such a lot of various symptoms I would suggest that you get your Doctor to check you over again and refer to you another specialist for a 2nd opinion.
All of this also depends on where you live I'm guessing it's the US I am in the UK and I know from prior experience that when I was ill I was hospitalised and kept in until they actually found out what it was I was suffering from. Isn't this something that you can have done too?
I wish you all the best and hope that your health and state of mind both improve!

Do I have some form of tachycardia?

I have a heart question. My heart rate seems abnormally high when i'm exercising or even when i get up from a stationary position (sitting, laying, etc). It beats very fast and if i slow my pace my heart will eventually slow also. Occasionally, my vision tends to black out if i get out of bed too fast in the morning, or if i stand up from a crouching position. I read that this was normal on occasion but it happens to me quite often.
I'm not sure how accurate exercise machines are when letting you know your heart rate, but when exercising the machine was showing my heart rate to be just about 300. I got a little nervous about it so i stopped exercising, but i'm pretty sure i could have made it go a lot higher if i started exercising at a quicker pace. (My boyfriend was exercising alongside me and his heart rate was significantly lower so i think the machines were at least semi accurate).
I went to the doctors and they gave me an EKG because they thought my heart rate was a bit fast when taking my blood pressure, but everything came back normal. Blood work was also normal. My doctor said i was out of shape and to start exercising and drinking more water. I am 22 years old about 5'4", and i weigh 115 lbs. I don't exercise at all, and i'm wondering if that does indeed have something to do with it.
Also, i don't know if this would be in any way related to my heart issues, but my hands get very cold when exposed to cold weather or even just washing my hands in cold water and it is extremely hard to warm them. It's to the point where i suspect i may have Raynaud's Disease. I guess that's sort of a different story but i was wondering if maybe it could be related to my heart prob.
Based on the information that i've given would you recommend i see a cardiologist? Any ideas on what could be causing my rapid heart rate besides a heart issue? Thanks for all the help!! Sorry for my long winded message...

Many physicians in the 1970s and 1980s considered tachycardia (a rhythm above 120) which occured occasionally, to be within normal limits for many young people. However, in 2003, the thinking changed a bit with the description and study of a number of arrhythmias which we now know can occur in young people, and are occasionally of extreme consequence. This new strategy and thinking has not yet filtered down to a number of family physicians.
You should take your EKG copy to a cardiologist, with your symptoms clearly written out on paper (so that you have time to compose your descriptions of what you are noting and feeling clearly) and ask if he can rule out:

1. Long QT syndrome
2. Short QT syndrome
3. Wolff Parkinson White syndrome
4. Brugada syndrome
5. Supraventricular tachycardias etc.

He can also run a TSH which would help to indicate whether an excess production of thyroid hormone is contributing to your tachycardia.
Doing a workup for this should entail an echocardiogram to rule out any structural abnormalities of the heart, and may entail and additional EKG done a little differently than the original. It is definitely worth the peace of mind. Best wishes.

Can you help me? My grandma hasn't been acting normal. She seems confused & not concentrating & panics a lo?

Ok. So here's the deal. My grandma is diabetic & she is above 65 years old. & Lately (especially this past week) she has been having problems. She's had high blood pressure lately & unstable blood sugar levels (extremely high to extremely low). She says she has blurry vision & doesn't feel normal. She doesn't have insurance, but she goes to a free clinic. I just don't rly trust the nurse-practitioners there & want to make sure we're doing the right thing. If you can help by telling us what this sounds like, please do so. & Of course I'll make sure to check the internet & ask a doctor before taking any risks.
Today we went to the grocery store. At first she entered somewhat slowly through the entrance then walked on to pick up the hand sanitizer wipes and went inside. I of course assumed that she had seen the shopping carts in the entrance and ignored them on purpose because she didn't need them. But I discovered that she apparently didn't see them when she asked me where they were, looking around inside to find them (although I think she already knows that the carts were in the entrance). Anyway, I just brought the cart & she pushed it & we started walking along.
First thing I noticed was that she is much slower than she used to be. I could easily beat her and go around the corner for example and she wouldn't know where I went (in which case she would probably panic and look around not knowing what to do). So, I thought that maybe she's walking so slow because her feet hurt or she's too tired. So I asked her about her feet and if that's why she decided to push the cart herself so that she can lean over it. But she said her feet were fine. So we kept walking.
We took about three cycles around the store together. She stopped several times to check the prices of several items. It took her some time to find the prices of the items even if the price was right under the item. But once she finds it she can read it & compare with what she usually buys. Well, we finished our first cycle & we got near the entrance & she needed to go to the restroom. So, we went near it & I told her that this is where it is & that I'd wait outside. Yet, I still had to point it out again to her because she couldn't find it (although there's a big sign on top & of course the sign on the restroom door). Anyway, I waited outside for her just a little bit farther away from the restroom door, but close enough so that I could see her and she should see me. Yet, when she got out, she couldn't find me & stood in place, somewhat confused. I got closer & she said, "I couldn't find you" & it seemed she had panicked.
So, we went around the store again & I noticed she stopped & stood still several times in front of items I'm sure she wouldn't need. It didn't seem like she was checking the price or thinking of buying them, more like she wasn't really concentrating at all or she was testing her ability to see & concentrate. Also I noticed that if I make any change in the path we took before, she might not notice it at first, but if she doesn't see me, she panics, as if she is lost. She also wanted to check her blood pressure. So we went to the machine & when she sat she told me she couldn't find the Start button. So, I pointed her to the "Clear" button first & then I told her that the Start button is the green one & she found it. By the way, she said her pressure was fine.
There isn't much else to mention other than that when we were walking around I saw my mom several times, but I doubt Grandma noticed her at all, other than when she talked to her face to face. It seems that her vision might not be the problem, it's more like confusion & lack of concentration & of course panic.
Do you know what these symptoms sound like?
Thanks! God bless!
Thx a lot everybody.
She'll be getting her eyes checked later this month. Also, she had a lot of problems with her medications & had probably confused several medications together. What we'll be doing is we'll keep her medicine in check & we'll make sure she has good, healthy meals & taking her vitamins. I looked into both depression and Alzhiemer's & I think it'd be easier to tell what the problem is if we don't have any medication problems & if her blood sugar level is in check. Problem is we don't know what to do to get it back in line. She used to have it in control with an average of around 100-150 glucose level way back when. Now, it's either extremely high or extremely low. She eats well, no sugar (unless the glucose level goes low) & low carbs. She exercises & walks a lot (although she is getting weaker & her feet are starting to hurt). Any suggestions?
I wish there'd be a good doctor at the Free Clinic to fix it. For now, I'll try to find another way for her to get coverage.

I believe you should take her to a doctor. She is already 65 so she can apply to get medicaid call 211 or find out where you could take her to apply for it. It is very important for you to notice any changes in her behavior because it could be something worse. My grandma had a massive stroke a few days ago and I wish she was still able to talk and walk like yours. Take care of her and be very patience she could have begginins of Alzheimers or a complication due to her diabetes that is affecting her judgement.

Did I get the correct eye glasses and contact lens prescriptions?

6 months ago I went to a new eye doctor. I hadn't been to the optometrist in 5 years. All I know from my old prescription was Right SPH: -1.25 and Left SPH: -1.75 and I have an astigmatism. I had no problems except at night things were a little blurrier and my glasses broke.

The new doctor "inherited" my file and after an examination (machine test and he checked them out) said my eyes had gotten better, but the astigmatism worsened. He said that my new vision was Right) SPH: -1.00; CYL: -0.75; AXIS: 174 and Left) SPH: -1.25, CYL: -0.75; AXIS: 14. However he wrote me a lower prescription. SPH was -0.75 (right) and -1.00 (left). He told me that my eyes would get worse if I had the stronger prescription. At first, it was slightly harder to see with these new glasses. But I think I've gotten used to them and my old glasses seem a little strong and I can definitely tell the difference in astigmatism correction.

Yesterday, I went in for a contact lens fitting and the pair he gave me to try out are weaker than my glasses. The prescription for the contact lens read a little differently than the glasses. Instead of "SPH" they say "D". The contact lens prescription is as follows Right) D; -0.50; CYL: -0.75; AXIS: 170 and Left) D: -0.75; CYL: -0.75; AXIS: 10. I told my doctor that it's harder to see even though I can "read the letters on the wall". I want to make sure I'm getting the right prescriptions. I know I have a relatively low prescription. I'm a 28 year old male in good health with no history or medical issues.

Thanks in advance.

He probably gave you a lower prescription to avoid the accommodative response. People who are overminus focuses behind their eyes, and your eyes respond by using your crystalline lens to place it on the retina. Over time, this may cause complications. So a way to avoid this is to make sure that we dont overminus you.

With minus prescriptions, your contact lens RX will be lower than your spectacle. It is the opposite with plus prescriptions. Also, you have a decent amount of cylinder on your lenses. Typically, contact lenses come in axis increments of 10's. Since you have a 174 and a 14 on each eye, he can only prescribe you contact lenses that are at axis 170 and 10, respectively. This is partially why you're not seeing as clearly with contact lenses.

  • A reading strategy for low-vision users of SmartView Xtend « Jon Udell

A while back I reviewed the reading machine that my mom, who suffers from macular degeneration, now depends on. I gave it a thumbs up, but also noted that she was having some problems.

On my last visit I came up with a method that will help, if she can get the hang of it. The method is non-obvious, and isn’t documented anywhere I’ve been able to find, so I made a short movie to illustrate it.

    The key insights are:

Use the left margin screw to set a left margin somewhere

Getting this right makes a huge difference. My mom was constantly fiddling with the position of the book on the tray. This frustrated her, and seriously impaired her ability to read fluidly.
