My 3rd grade, 8 years old son has developed a dislike of reading to himself. He has complained that it makes him tired, and he said that it does bother his eyes.
I took him to the eye doctor, who said that my son is farsighted, and that although his vision is 20/20, that it is like lifting a 30 lb weight for my son. He recommended glasses all of the time. The correction is +1.00 in one eye, +1.25 in the other.
I went home and looked into this, and found that farsightedness is common in young children, that it is weak eye muscles, and that it will autocorrect without glasses if given time. It appears to me that the correction proscribed is in that low number range where glasses are not recommended.
I don't think I would have questioned this if it weren't for the fact that he gave my husband a prescription as well "to make things crisper" even though he could read the bottom of the chart. My husband is 36 and has had perfect vision his whole life.
Educated opinions, please.
"I went home and looked into this, and found that farsightedness is common in young children, that it is weak eye muscles, and that it will autocorrect without glasses if given time."
sure. in "young" children. but not at age 8. he's not going to "grow out of" being farsighted at age 8. unlikely.
i like the 30 lb weight analogy, thats one i use myself. just b/c you *CAN* lift 30 lbs doesnt mean you want to carry it around with you all day every day. do you? your son doesnt, either. this is why even tho he can "read 20/20" he has SYMPTOMS (makes him "tired", bothers his eyes, etc)
20/20 is a terrible way to assess vision anyway. people with +10.00 Rx's can "read 202/20". so what? that doesnt mean anything except to the school nurse.
also, comparing your son's vision/complaints to your husband's is also a bad idea. apples and oranges.
if your son has symptoms, he probably needs the glasses.

Hi there, 21 year old male. took a lancet test with a colour chart, before eating a meal last night and 99% sure it was at 2.2mmol/l. I took it again this morning after waking up, and it came up in the 2.2. again. Iv suffered with the symptoms of diabetes now for few years, but the doc doesnt seem to think anything is wrong.
My symptoms include:
Constant Thirst most days,
Blurred Vision,
Irregular looking stools (never solid and very "orange-ish" in colour)
Always feeling tired and feel like i have no energy,
had 2 UTI's in the space of 6 months.
Regular Thrush
Im lost as to what to do now as im fed up of feeling rubbish all the time.
Low blood sugar is definitely NOT a symptom of diabetes. It is counter-indicative. That is hypoglycemia. Eat a snack before bed. The doctor should be concerned about the recurring infections. You need more blood work.

My vote is for "Hearts and Bones" by Paul Simon. Here's what AMG said about this album:
Hearts and Bones was a commercial disaster, the lowest-charting new studio album of Paul Simon's career. It is also his most personal collection of songs, one of his most ambitious, and one of his best. It retains a personal vision, one largely devoted to the challenges of middle-aged life, among them a renewed commitment to love; the title song was a notable testament to new romance, while "Train in the Distance" reflected on romantic discord. Elsewhere, "The Late Great Johnny Ace" was his meditation on John Lennon's murder and how it related to the mythology of pop music. Musically, Simon moved forward and backward simultaneously, taking off from the jazz fusion style of his last two albums into his old loves of doo wop and rock & roll while also incorporating current sounds with such new collaborators as dance music producer Nile Rodgers and minimalist composer Philip Glass....

I'm am seventeen years old and I am having black outs. I do not go unconcious but my vision just disappears for a while when I have been bending over to work in the garden or something then standing back up. I am not sure what the problem is, but I checked my blood sugar it was 98 and I checked my blood pressure and the reading was 130 / 60. I checked the BP chart for a seventeen year old and the maximum for systolic was 120 and the minimum for diastolic 73. I wonder if my high and low BP may have something to do with the Blackouts. Please help me. God bless you.
Not enough history to give you anything diagnostic for you. My impression is that it sounds benign. Talk to your personal physician who can examine you for signs and ask more specifics about symptoms.
In the meantime, stay comfortably hydrated and avoid caffeinated, sugary food & drink (ie cola/soda pop) as well as alcohol, all of which can dehydrate you. If you are significantly overweight, you can develop high blood pressure sooner than later.
That said, an isolated BP of 130/60 is not meaningful, and the glucose was within normal limits.
Google/Yahoo "vasovagal syncope" and see if it sounds remotely like your event...and get a doctor's appointment!

Living With Low Vision | LowVisionLI.com
Low vision has a variety of causes, including eye injury, diseases and heredity. Sometimes low vision involves a lack of acuity, meaning that objects appear blurred. Other times, it involves a significant loss of peripheral vision and visual field. Other symptoms of low vision include light sensitivity, distorted vision or loss of contrast. Not being able to drive safely, read quickly or easily see images on a television or computer screen can cause people with low vision to feel shut off from the world. They may be unable to get around town independently, earn a living or even shop for food and other necessities. Some visually impaired people become completely dependent on friends and...
