I would like to buy some night vision binoculars/monoculars as a gift for a keen wildlife spotter. I do not want to spend a huge amount of money, but also do not want to buy a cheap substitute if these are not very good. Can anyone recommend a good model which is not too expensive? Or any advice on whether these are very good at the lower end of the scale? Thanks :-)
if your trying to go inexpensive then your looking at generation 1. these are not that good. good night vision is very expensive. you might want to pick another gift.

I want to buy Binoculars w/Night Vision, but I do not know which one to buy so that I can see at a maximum distance so Please tell me which specifications I have to choose like 60X35 or lower or higher?
In case you don't know, let me explain the meaning of the numbers. The first number is the magnification. In your example you used 60, in this case things would look 60 times closer. An object 60 feet away would appear as 1 foot away. The last number is the size of the objective lense. In your example 35, which would be 35 mm across. The larger the objective lense the more light it can collect. 12x is generally considered the max power that can be hand held [no tri pod] and that is hard for most people to hold steady enough to obtain a sharp image. Next comes the quality of the binoculars. All binoculars are far from being equal even though they may have the same power and objective lense size. A real good set of 12 x 50 night vison binoculars start out at around $800. and up.

A dioptric number and a magnification number are not the same thing. Diopter strength represents a specific magnification power (X). For example, a 5-diopter provides 2.5X magnification (at a distance of 8")
Can be used with included frames, or clipped onto prescription eyeglasses

I'm living proof that it does work. Used to have 4/20 'average' binocular eyesight (both eyes simulateously) and after only a month, increased the 'average' to 10/20. I used to have 'clear flashes' at lower quality (15/20-20/20) and two days ago I started having clear flashes that were 20/13 and better. Confirmed on a Snellen eye chart for everything, tested on a regular basis under similar conditions. Those charts do not lie.
My clear flash two days ago appears to have gone beyond 20/10 because I could see the strands of hair on kids' hair about 1/4 to 1/5 mile from where I was standing. I could also see details in a jet stream in the sky about 30-50 miles away.
Vision is largely a MENTAL process. In fact, only one person to my knowledge has ever done intensive studies on how to modify vision through the eye of the mind itself. That person is the man behind the Bates method. If any of you have questions, I can add details to answer them. Come on, give me your best shot.
Dorris- two reasons it hasn't gained acceptance in the medical community is due to limited interest and incorrect/limited research procedures (and this includes even double blind randomized, controlled trials, which is our 'gold standard'). Also, science is prone to "swings" of groupthink...and this can lead to a trend of misinformation in the public, so it's an individual's job to decide what is acceptable--by trying something and not being too dependent on a group's way of thinking.
Neuroplasticity is a new, recently emerged field of neuroscience. It reveals how imprints remain in the mind long after drills are done. It is so new that it has not gained mainstream acceptance yet.
"The main thing to know is that even the adult brain is not "hard-wired" with fixed and immutable neuronal circuits. Many people have been taught to believe that once a brain injury occurs, there is little to do to repair the damage. This is simply not the case and there is no fixed period of time after which "plasticity" is blocked or lost."

Thanks for the link, dorris.
Good for you if it worked but so far Bates is not accepted in the medical community. Their claim is not back by solid scientific evidence. You may take a look at NEUROVISION (www.neuro-vision.com).Research has been done (and some still ongoing) regarding their premise of-- training the brain to see better. However, it is only available in selected countries.

The other reviewers who commented on the field of view are practically right. At this price you don’t guess optical quality, but this binoc gives an image so teeny that quality is beside the top. It’s like looking down a pair of soda-straws. It’s my impression that they were really designed to have a wide field of view, but are manufactured with a ring-shaped baffle inside that cuts out most of the visual field. (Admittedly I didn’t smack ‘em commence with a hammer to check. Just tossed ‘em in the gibberish.)The folks at Bushnell not compulsory I send them in for inspection and “possible” replacement, but it wasn’t worth the shipping…
