Gadget for the blind to alert them if they is too near something?

I would like to know if there are any gadgets out there that alerts the blind if they are too close to something.

I know this is the function of the white stick that they use. However, if such a gadget is created, what are the uses of it (in comparison to the white stick)?

So two questions:
1. Is there such a gadget?
2. What are they uses of it?

I did see a show once and they had a clicking device and they used it as a echolocation device. On the show they had a few blind people demonstrate that they could ride a bike. You may be able to look that up.

See the reality from the following information in violent Britain, What do you think?

A blind man in Sheffield no longer uses his white stick outside as it makes him a target for local thugs. This man has been attacked three times by thugs but who actually cares? The Soft Liberal politicians and lenient courts giving out pathetic punishments are to blame for the rise in yob violence on the streets.

People who are on disability seem to get constantly attacked by the media?

Do you think this is a ploy by the government to take our minds off how much MP are earning. Rather like using a scapegoat?

Programmes like Little Britain make out people who use white stick are not blind and those in wheelchairs do not really need them which is covered up by mock humour. Making out that they are all on the fiddle.

To be registered with a disability is not an easy undertaking. People with a disability have to be seen by their own doctor and expert doctors who are trained in this department. They are sent for a medical examination.

Certainly there have been some cases of fraud people claiming when there is nothing wrong with them, but those have been very few.

Most people in United Kingdom would much rather be working and earning at least ‘minimum wage’ than being out of work. Surely they are targeted to steer your attention away from big earners are they not?

If there were no such high earners in UK, then surely it would create more jobs for us all, a sharing of economical cake so to speak.

I'm aware that sadly people coming from foreign countries to live over in United Kingdom are also targeted.
Yes, no one is excluded from attacks by the media
Fifi This was the very reason I asked this question, because there are people like your mother who are genuinely unwell, but are not being given justice. They are not given their rights. And present government are making big cut backs they say, to prevent fraud, but are in actual fact making those in desperate need’s suffering even greater. Fortunately for your mother she has a kind daughter to help her, and I’m sure she is very grateful to you; but how sad for those suffering likewise, who have no one to help them. No good even telling them to try essential oils in hot bath like Melissa oil, to help them breath easier, when they can’t afford it.
Agreed, it's unfair to take parking space reserved for those who really are disabled and have need of it.

I have nothing but respect and sympathy for those who are genuinely disabled and not able to work. I do know several "disabled" people who have full time jobs and do well. Even people with pretty severe disabilities can do many kinds of work and often do.
However, I also know (personally) of a lot of people who could work if they really wanted to, but find it more convenient to stay at home.
Someone I know is unable to work due to "incapacitating migraines", but I also know that he spends all night watching films in the dark, and sleeps most of the day. If anything is guaranteed to bring on a migraine, it's that (I know cos I get them myself).
Another woman I know is not able to work because she cannot sit down all day due to her bad back. However, you'll find that she spends most of the day at home sitting down of the sofa and picking up and playing with her grandchildren. (Bad back, my bum.)
I also know several epileptics who have their symptoms under control and have not had fits for several years, but lie to their doctors that they still suffer badly from them on a regular basis.
Finally, I used to know a recovering drug addict who was quite normal most of the time, except when he was in the GP's surgery. I went with him once and was amazed by the show he put on. He was terrifying. I think the doctor signed him off longer just to get rid of him.
Maybe it's just my bad luck to know some really crappy people (none are my friends, btw, just acquaintances) but I suspect there are lots more people like these out there.
Conversely, my mother has cancer and can't work at the moment and has been through hell trying to get any benefits at all. It is so very unjust.
I suppose it just gets to me sometimes that I and my family work so hard to have a nice life and other people get everything handed to them on a plate.

Can I play the PC game to my advantage?

If I make out that I am blind and looking for work, could I force the council to allow me to have a job cleaning the female changing rooms at the local swimming pool? Since I'd be a valuable disabled member of staff for the quotas, would they be willing to ignore the exception to the Sex Discrimination Act which allows gender specific selection for such positions on account that I couldn't see any juicy bits?

I reckon with the help of a white stick and some sunglasses, I could pull off a pretty convincing blind man act for a couple of weeks of free live strip shows before I get rumbled.

law is above PC -
Pc can infuence the law and in this case PC is the disability discrimination law. so in that act they cannot refuse you employment based on ur disability if you can preform the duties
which i dont see how you can - if you can't see how will you know if the changing rooms need cleaning ---by feel ;)

I have a story.... does it sound good? Lots of constructive criticism!?

I have a story about a blind girl. For my plot line, please go to this link:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index; _ylt=Ap6.OZc6Cpx_bpOV6Fld1Zrsy6IX;_ylv=3 ?qid=20091229185018AAVwdLz

Here is the beginning. I am a teenage author. Do I have potential?

She is blind.

I see her clutch the white stick with the red end so tight that her knuckles turn white. She walks along side a woman with wispy hair, so light it is almost see through. She has the same hair. She walks up my driveway.

The doorbell rings.

I am scared. I have never met a blind person before. I do not know what to say to her. Am I sorry she can’t see? Inside my head, I am glad she cannot see me. She would know that I am frightened.

My mother answers the door. She is also afraid though she does not show it.

“Hello,” she says in a happy, bright voice. “You must be our new neighbors.”

“Yes,” the woman replies, in that same, light tone. “And this is my daughter, Beth.”

Beth smiles.

“Hello,” she greets my mother.

My mother can barely control her voice as she looks at the girl whose eyes can see nothing – nothing but black, nothing but darkness. Nothing.

“Hello, Beth,” my mother says. Her voice is filled with pity. “Come inside.”

Beth and her mother enter. They come into the living room where I am perched on the couch. I get off of my knees and sit down.

“This is my daughter, Whitney,” introduces my mother. “She is over there on the couch,” she adds, looking at Beth.

Beth nods. It is strange. She seems scared, too. Like she has never met people before. Like she is wondering what people are thinking of her. Like she is thinking that she is different for being blind.

My mother leaves to get refreshments for us. I sit there in silence. It is odd. A mother and her blind daughter sit on the sofa opposite. The mother is staring at me. I suppose Beth would be staring at me too if she could see.

Beth’s mother attempts to make conversation.

“How old are you, Whitney?” she asks.

“Fourteen,” I reply.
“So is Beth!” her mother says. “Beth!” She shakes her daughter. “Whitney is fourteen! You two will become such great friends!”

Beth smiles and turns in my direction. “That’s great,” she says.

I smile. Meanwhile, I am thinking that this girl is not going to be my friend. How can someone who cannot even see me be my friend?

*Please do not take this idea. I worked hard to come up with it.

I think the concept of it is great. Just work on the way you're trying to portray Beth. Because if u want her to be the central character, she needs to have a strong foundation right from page 1. As a literature student, i have been taught to look at it from a critical point of view, n were i u, i would talk of the details more. And try to build on that awkwardness between them It gives their friendship a very intriguing dimension. But thats just me :) Good luck with ur story! I hope it turns out great :)

  • Blind Man Trips Over Boat Shoes On NYC Subway, Doesn't Get Killed ...

So I was on the B train yesterday going downtown, and watched a blind man with a white stick trying to navigate the speeding car with a wheelie suitcase. Not a pretty sight. He finally made it to the end of the car after crashing into a couple poles and getting hung up on someone else’s suitcase and a hipster’s big green boat shoes*, sussed out that there was a seat, and what did he do? He tried to go through the heavy sliding door leading out onto the little perilous platform that separates one car from the next. I mean, rhonestly : he’s trying to open the door with the same hand that holds the cane, while, with the other hand, holding the extended wheelie suitcase handle, while being knocked around by the motion of train like a hipster without his boat shoes on ice.
