I'm 15. When I was twelve, a mentally unstable boy punched me in my left eye. I lost 100% of the vision in that eye. Now I have cancer in my right eye. I'll be able to keep the eye but the surgical removal of the tumor is going to deprive me of all of my vision in that eye as well. I need to learn brail, I need a brail keyboard, but I can't find a complete set of all this stuff online anywhere.
Since you are school age, your parents should be working with your school to make sure you acquire the skills of blindness--braille, orientation and mobility, assistive technology. Once you leave school, you would qualify for rehabilitation through your state service. There is a coordinator in each state for a pool of federal money set aside for educational materials. These people are generally also an excellent resource for parents and schools. A list is at:

As everyone has different needs, you won't find a "set" of anything for sale!

Hello,
I was wondering if anybody knows a free/cheap program like ZoomText Magnifier/Reader. Somebody very close to me is legally blind and I would like to have a program on my computer so he can also use it.
The price online is ridiculous, 600$??? Also, if anybody knows about useful websites for the blind, programs in NY, anything...Please let me know. He is young, into sports, nature and trips. Thanks a lot.

I am not blind but I use tools that blind people do, if they are available and not scarce which i have never come across. I have a learning disability , I can read pretty good but I like to have large print text because it doesn't look crowded and it's easier to process. I check out audio books from the library as well as the book because I am an audio visual learner.
with my learning disability , certain life skills have been delayed - tying my shoes , math , reading , buttoning shirts , and a few other things. It's kind of funny that I have difficultly telling time. Other people don't think it's funny when I read the time as being one hour early or one hour ahead and they say - Oh crap ! i am late ! then I say " you look at it". We have become so lazy with digital watches and clocks but I would like to learn to tell time on an analog clock. I have a friend who is nearly blind that has a watch that talks but the numbers are in braille. I know how to read braille ( I am a very curious person and I have a friend who used to work at a blind school and she had to learn braille - at the time a didn't have much of a life
) a little bit but I am not blind so why do I need to learn. I only know letters : A-F and that's by sight and with a key. so that doesn't count for much.
So getting to the point ; Is there such thing as a talking watch?
Yes, Radio shack will most likely have one, I've seen them there before and if I remember correctly they were only around $20.
In the beginning of this year, I was in a relationship w/a person who (as I was told by a friend..Her 1/2 brother) was desperately trying to break away from an abusive husband. I went to meet her...Led by my "friend"...And sparks flew. From what I was told..I was great. Divorce papers were to b filed, I almost paid for them. I'm no stranger to trouble, and the father of the person I was seeing is a Police Officer. I was told to resolve a few matters(turn myself in..which I planned to do anyway)and I would have his blessings.... I did so..and during my brief 97 day extraction from the situation..I was robbed blind of tools I used to make a living (even though my family tried to secure them..they were threatened w/harrassment charges)Now I'm paying out the tail for small claims filing fees on a case that only the plaintiff shows up for, Starting from scratch and trying to avoid bitterness. She went back w/the man who was "Oh so very bad",and I lost my life in the process. Outtawordssorry
she does not deserve a guy like you!!!! thats for sure. just go on with your life and everything will just be fine. you will see it eventually!

Social Media: Helping Businesses Save Money - Blind Acre Media
Small businesses all have the same problem these days. How can they save more money? Social media is one important way that businesses are saving money while still delivering value.
Whether being used for community building, customer service, product marketing, or staying organized and communicating as a team, one common theme can be found of the use of social media: cost savings.
Social media has given small businesses the ability to market themselves in a way that wouldn’t have been possible before. It takes a small time commitment, but the overall costs are minimal. This allows more companies to allocate resources to other parts of their business.
Here are four ways businesses are using social media for results.
