The computer itself doesn't talk, special software does--Jaws and Window-Eyes are the two major products. Any computer that has their hardware requirements will work, so you can buy a computer through any reputable dealer.

how do blind people use their computers?

I have been pondering this question for weeks now, and i thought if the computer can talk, it would be cool =D!!! but what if they don't have ears to listen to the computer?

There are many text-to-speech programs available for computer use. My wife has 2 of them; one is "JAWS" (Job Access With Speech) from Freedom Scientific, and the other is "ZoomText" from Ai Squared. Both will "read" what is on the screen in almost all applications. Also, she has a Canon scanner and program that will scan any printed material into the computer, which will then be read by either JAWS or ZoomText.
There is also a special printer that will print out the text on the screen in Braille so that it can be "read" later if one desires.

If you were going to lose one sense whitch one would it be?

heres the thing it says describe which one you would give up and why? if you were going to lose one, how could you give one up? be either way this was my answer is it a vaild answer? comments please.

As hard as it would be to lose one of my senses, I would have to choose taste. Of all the senses this
would be the least detrimental to my survival. Even with today's modern conveniences for the disabled such as talking computers for the blind, I couldn't stand to lose any other sense because of the life style I'd prefer. Taste however is an
enjoyable convenience, which would be greatly missed, but in the long run would probably make me eat healthier and not eat as much. Besides I only eat 3 times a day but I see, hear, touch, and smell constantly. So even though I would never give in to any such threats and would probably be tortured for my incorporation with the given "bad persons"
I would lose my sense of taste. I will always have the memories of all the huge meals I've eaten and can always watch "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman" to cheer me up. It is however in my opinion that it is cruel and unusual punishment to ask a being that solely relies on his senses, to choose to lose one of them up. When would I ever be in the position of having to choose what sense to lose, other then in this hypothetical situation? People lose there senses at birth or in horrible accidents and would never choose to lose one of them. It does seem probable that you could interpret my answer to classify me. Different people will chose different answers so there has to be some system of interpretation to make use of my response.
Regardless, I would never want to lose any of my senses, but faced with no other option, I would give up my taste for I would never give up my taste of music, or my love of the sky's and actually being able to interact with my perceived environment through the most necessary senses required to have a notion. But one must conclude that losing any of the senses could attribute to the development of current senses and could activate otherwise unexpressed senses that could arise form the need to adapt to ones environment.
Thus my answer is contrary to my statements because you must consider that if someone if willing to give up one of the senses then you might as well be willing to give up all of your senses. Still in the end we will lose all of our senses.

I agree, taste would be the easiest to give up.

psycho computer it keeps talking to me help!!?

okay well i have a macbook. not air or pro, just a macbook. and well i remembered seeing this thing on the apple site a few days ago about being able to adjust the volume by degrees and i was trying to do that but i couldn't remember which keys to press. i was randomly pressing the 4 keys in the bottom left hand corner when all the sudden i hear this voice coming from the computer. it tells me what i type like right now it is repeating what i type back to me it is really creepy it's like i turned on the setting for blind people to use it or something. it tells me everything that i am doing and like the head/name of the page i click on. what is going on and how do i get it to stop??!?? btw i was hitting the fn, ctrl, alt/option, and the button with the apple and the curly square thing on it. i'm not sure which ones i hit that made it act weird though sorry =/ help would be appreciated!

It sounds as though you've accidentally turned on Voiceover.

If you haven't already fixed this... hit [Command (apple key)], [Fn] and [F5] to turn it off

  • David Paterson: Unlikely Hero

This Tuesday Hanni and I head to Long Island – we’ll be visiting three different schools while we’re there. During our last visit, I thought it was kismet that we were there the very day David Paterson was named governor. David Paterson lost sight in his left eye and much of the sight in his right eye after an infection when he was a baby. When he took office in March, 2008, he became the first blind governor ever in the history of the United States.

Paterson’s appointment gave me a great opportunity to brainstorm with the Long Island school kids we were visiting. “How will your new governor be able to read?” I asked. We talked about Braille. We decided a talking computer might help. If neither of those reading tricks worked, well, hey, he’s the governor. “He could just make his workers read aloud to him!” one third grader exclaimed.
