What need-blind schools are the easiest to get into?

My first choice (Washington University in St. Louis) isn't need blind and all the need-blind schools I'm aware of are pretty much reaches. My family earns less than $20,000 a year and my SAT score is around 2100, to give a general idea of my situation.

There are colleges out there that are well known for giving extremely generous financial aid to those who can get in. They include Harvard, Grinnell, Kenyon, Princeton, Stanford, Pomona College, the New College of Florida, Thomas Aquinas College, Beloit College, the College of the Atlantic, Wabash College, Claremont McKenna, Washington U in St. Louis*, Tulane, Denison U, Cal Tech, Olin College of Engineering, Cooper Union, all the US Military Academies, Knox College, Rippon College, Truman State U, Randolph College, NJIT, College of the Ozarks, Deep Springs, Dartmouth, Yale, Vassar, Middlebury, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Swarthmore, Notre Dame.

I don't know if these colleges are need blind in terms of admissions. Not a lot are, now days. However, if you are a very well qualified candidate for the school, and they let you in, they have very generous financial aid. And the US Military academies, the Cooper Union, Olin College, College of the Ozarks, Deep Springs, the Webb Institute, Berea College - those are free if you can get in. You may have to pay for housing and food - but at some of those, you do not.

What you may want to seek out are colleges that are both need blind, and full need. Full need means that they will provide all the aid you need, not just part of it. Those that I know do that include: Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Middlebury College, MIT, Princeton University, Williams College, Yale University, and Amherst College.

Some colleges, including Hamilton College, Macalester College, Mount Holyoke College and Smith College, are need blind unless you're a borderline candidate. So for example, if it's down to two students, both of whom are borderline re: GPA and SAT, and they only have space for one, they admit the one who needs the least aid. But if you're solidly in the ranges for the schools, you stand a good chance.

* I wonder if Washington U in St. Louis isn't like this? I know they aren't need blind, but if you were firmly in their ranges, not borderline, they would admit you, and give generous aid. But if you're borderline, then your need for aid could keep you out.

Some colleges are need blind re: admissions, but make no promise to fund your entire need. Bard is an example of that.

One of the things you should consider, in addition to applying to some of the elite schools, is also applying to the best public university in your state. In addition, you should also apply to schools - especially schools with decent sized endowments - where your SATs and GPA are high for them; and also to schools where you're underrepresented. For example, if you're male, you could look at Regis College in Mass., which only just went co-ed. I did this back when I was applying - I applied to some expensive, elite privates; to the best public uni in my home state; and to some private schools where my SATs were above their ranges. I then was able to analyze their financial aid offers and decide based on those.

General information on Washington State School for the Blind

Does anyone know what schools for blind children are like?

I'm writing a book and There's one part about a blind girl going to kindergarten for the first time. Help?

Well is she going to a school for the blind, or is she going to a mainstream kindergarten? A lot of blind children do the latter since going to their state school for the blind often means living away from home in dorms during the school week. And then there are children who go to mainstream schools that have a special department for support for blind students.

I am blind (I assume in your research for you book you discovered how a blind person would use a computer. If not, I can tell you if you e-mail me). and so is my boyfriend and most of my closest friends. I went to a mainstream school, a mainstream school with a vision program (that's normally what they call it), and I was home schooled for a time. My boyfriend went to our state boarding school for the blind as well as a mainstream school with a vision program at different times in his life. We also have several close friends who have done all of the above at some point in their life. If you'd like, e-mail me at BlackByrdFly@gmail.com, and I can answer your questions about blindness and school for blind children to help you with your book.

Are you having big heart to adopt wild animals, donate orphans, attend blind schools?

We enjoy doing social service. Atleast we can have a peace of mind while spending time for them.

If you have an orphan to date, I'll take one. Need some help around the house, and we have lots of food.

Why do schools turn a blind eye to violent students that attack teachers? ?

Some attacks cause permanent injuries. I have known several teachers who had injuries that ended their careers or left them partially disabled. Teachers are suppose to protect the students, but who will protect the staff?

This is not true.

Its not turning a blind eye - We have compulsory education in the US. Every child. even the violent ones are given that privledge. granted some do not appreciate the gift they are given - but they all have to be taught. We have even set up special schools for those who cannot achieve in a typical school setting - kids in juvinile detention are given access to teachers and the curriculum as well.

easy to blame the schools... but when our entire society has agreed that education is a right then simplistically blaming the educators is a straw man argument.

  • City asks for patience

Omaha officials also promised to review a new policy that calls for piling snow in the middle of some streets in the downtown area and on parts of Dodge Street.

The city and surrounding suburban road crews focused their initial efforts on keeping major streets open and drivable, starting Tuesday, at the height of the storm.

It wasn't until Wednesday that snowplows turned their attention to residential streets, with Omaha announcing a two-phase cleanup plan.

McIntyre urged people not to give snowplows more work to do by blowing and shoveling their snow into the streets. He said it is against city ordinance to put anything in the street that obstructs the flow of traffic.

    Schools as “Leader Training Grounds”

A couple of years ago, I received news from Deerfield Academy, a prep school in Massachusetts and my high school alma mater, that its headmaster, Eric Widmer was to become the first headmaster of the newly formed “King’s Academy,” in Madaba, Jordan.  As Deerfield’s alumni newsletter indicated, The King’s Academy aspires to be a “training ground for the region’s next generation of business, community, and government leaders.”

Sounds altogether laudable.  It is, after all, perhaps the highest aspiration of ambitious schools – especially preparatory schools and many colleges and universities – to become “training grounds” for the best known “leaders” since such boosts a school’s prestige, and higher prestige brings more student and faculty applications, selectivity and funding.
