Jobs For The Legally Blind

Answers

jobs for legally blind people?

My deceased wife's brother is legally blind. He has like 20% vision.. He's also somewhat slow and somewhat learning disabled - he's worked with lighthouse for the blind, and several other agencies, and they try him on jobs but they send him home because he's too slow. He can actually do things but it takes him a while. He's done pretty woodworking, etc. but it probably isn't something he could do if there's a time deadline. ARe there things he might be able to do? with his vision like it is? The only things I thought of required more training than I think he can do or if it's physical it requires him to be faster than he is. He's working with the rehabilitation commission, etc.

Indiana-Disablitiy for the blind ???

My friend has recently became legally blind and was told that Indiana does not consider being blind a disablitliy??? Is this true; what organizations can she contact to get help? What are somes jobs that blind people can have?

Blindness is a protected disability anywhere in the US, under -federal- laws. However, even being blind, she may not be determined disabled for social security purposes- the nature of your disability must PREVENT being able to work any form of job, which blindness does not.

She should contact her state's rehab department for independent living and employment related matters.

There are very, very few jobs that blind people cannot equally compete in, with accommodation. We can become lawyers and chefs and actuaries and stay-at-home mothers. Her career options are really very wide open- they depend on what SHE wishes to do.

What is a good part time job for someone who is legally blind?

Hello,
I was recently let go from my part time job because I "can't see well enough to clean properly". Yeah I'm aware that it is not ok for them to do that, but it is not the first time that has happened to me, so I have no interest in trying to make a case of it. But since this has happen to me before my self esteem has taken a major hit. I need to find a new part time job, but I have been feeling like I can not do any thing right lately and I don't have any ideas of what I want to do. I am going to find something more long term, but in the meantime I need a part time job to keep me occupied. As I mentioned I am legally blind, I can't drive or read fine print, I am also color blind and don't see very well in really bright lights (like out side at noon, not typical indoor lighting). But I don't have any problems seeing to walk or do every day tasks. I have used a cash register before and it doesn't really present me with any problems, also I am great with people, and every job I have had customers seem to really like me and miss me when I gone, I also like animals, and cooking. With all that said can anyone think of a part time job that I might be good at? Any and all suggestions are welcome and thanks to all!

What about a receptionist? If you can see well enough to answer a multi-line phone and transfer calls, that may be an option. Also, perhaps some type of job where you assemble things, as long as the parts are such that you could see them well enough (nothing too tiny or intricate).

Go to your local job service office or temp agency and ask them what kinds of options they have available for someone with your visual challenges.

Good luck!

Starting a business (in debt) ?!...Help please!?

Starting my own business (in debt)?! Help.?
Lets get the facts out here.
1) I have no jobs with no prospects after moving back to the US be with my mother who is legally blind. The job hunt (as you can expect) is proving no results.
2) I am a makeup artist by trade with a great resume, but no college degree.
3) I'd love to start my own business and do freelance makeup and know that I'd be very successful. The downside is I would need money for supplies/the full kit and I am currently roughly $8000 in debt. (Like I said...overseas move.)

Is there any way this could work for me? Am I reaching too high? If I need a small business loan...can I live on that money as well while my business is starting up?

All help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you SO much.

There's no very nice way to say this, but you're screwed. In normal times (and we're certainly not there now) to start a business you need to put down a good portion of your own money to be able to get a loan to start a business. And not only do you not have any of your own money, but you're starting $8,000 in debt. And this is what you need in normal times. As times are so much worse right now, you need to be even more financially secure. I guess that move overseas was not such a good move. I'd suggest trying to land a job in a beauty shop somewhere, pay down your debt, build up a clientele and break out on your own when you have no debt, have some savings and the economy is better. Good luck!

Braille Literacy: Lessons from a Right-Handed World

Are you right-handed?  Most of us are, and – from the cashier’s station at the check out line of our grocery store to the good pair of scissors we got for Christmas — our world is designed with the right hand in mind.  We don’t think twice about sitting in those chairs with the arm rest/writing surface on the right or about the piano, which requires a person to play the more complicated melody with the right hand while the left takes a supportive and usually simpler part.  Years ago, parents and teachers forced left-handed children to use their right hands in order to avoid the stigma which accompanied left-handedness – a practice abandoned when it became clear that this was doing more harm than good.  Today, with a leftie in the White House and consumer choices that allow the southpaws among us to do it their own way, left-handedness is not the obstacle to living a normal life which it once was.
