Did you know they have Guide Horses for the blind... just like the guide dogs only little horses?

http://www.guidehorse.org/

I think it's totally awesome and if I'm ever blind I want a horse, forget a dog!

I'm with YOU! There are miniature horses they take into hospitals to visit like Therapy dogs. Cute, eh?

Have you seen the Guide Horse (miniature)?

There is a free-to-see video of a miniature horse named Panda learning to be a Guide Horse for the Blind at the Karen Pryor Clicker Training website. If you havem't seen it, please do. Panda is wonderful!

i have seen guide horses in real life and on the news. 1 i saw on the news was a regular sized horse!!!! they had video of the owner riding him right into a store!!! this was a year ago i think. the report was on how stores were trying to make it illegal for her even if the horse is for a disabled person. which i think is wrong but still kind of understandable.

UK Guide Horses for the Blind, what do you think?

I breed mini, midi and standard Shetlands and have been training horses all my life, I recently heard abouth the US Guide Horses Foundation and would love to see a similar thing in the UK, I would also love to take on the challenge of breeding a mini for this purpose and training it myself!
If successful I would like to then go on to breed and train more horses for this purpose.
Firstly, what is the general opinion on guide horses? I personally think it is a great idea, Secondly, any volunteers to try out the first guide horse? Those with a genuine need only and I will be launching a proper application process for this when the time comes that will require the relevant medical back up!

This website has a good video blog on seeing eye horses. http://www.clickertraining.com/allanimal s Clicker training works well for these situations because they learn to think and reason in a way that no other training allows.

Mini's are a better option than dogs because they live longer, are faster to train, are less prone to arthritis, and stay trained better. They do cost a bit more for upkeep, but overall, they are a great option.

Looking to get a minature horse for the kids as a companion animal .?

With the research Ive done they are very different from a shetland (they often are used as guide horses for blind people therapy animals for the disabled etc.)and with a responsible and caring environment we hope will make a wonderful addition to our farm family.
Minatures live till they are generally 25 to 35 years old.
Ive found a 9yr old mare who has had a couple of good foals and was chosen by the stud because of her very quiet temperament Which I specifically asked for.. Ive Also been offered a foal (when shes ready)from another stud ( In Australia its spring at the moment, who the other stud says its important for the kids to bond with a younger horse. Anyone have more information on this.

Will it realy depends on the foal, if you will be handraising it then yes because you will be training it. And if it is not trained then they can be somewhat dangerous around little kids because it will not know how to act.

Have you seen this lately?

Two Horses

Author - unknown

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.

From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite
amazing....

Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His
owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home
for him.

This alone is amazing.

If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes
from the smaller horse in the field.

Attached to the horse's halter is a small bell.
It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.

As you stand and watch these two friends,
you'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the
blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and
then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting that he will
not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each
evening, it stops occasionally and looks back, making sure that the
blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses,
A friend does not throw us away just because we are not perfect
or because we have problems or challenges.

He watches over us and even brings others into our lives
to help us when we are in need.

Sometimes we are the blind horsebeing guided by the little ringing
bell of those who a friend places in our lives.

Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way....

Good friends are like that... you may not always see them, but you
know they are always there.
Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours.
And remember....

Be kinder than necessary-
everyone you meet is fighting
some kind of battle.

Live simply,
Love generously,
Care deeply,
Speak kindly....

Leave the rest to a friend.
This was an e-mail, I've had it before. Today I was moved to share it with you. Glad you liked it.

That gave me goosebumps too. And sort of brought tears to my eyes....

"Be kinder than necessary-
everyone you meet is fighting
some kind of battle."

So true. You cant judge somebody's actions without walking in their shoes for a day.
I feel guilty for ever being mean to people.

That is a really good story.

  • Rhode Island Children's Book Awards 2008: Panda: a Guide Horse for ...

I just finnished a great book. The name of it was Panda:a guide horse for Ann. An interesting character is Panda, the guide horse, because Ann was blind and Panda was a guide horse. I learned that when you're blind it's very hard to do things. The type of book is non-fiction book. If you like to read. I recommend you to read this book.

Just FYI, there is no such thing as a seeing eye horse. Only guide dogs trained at the seeing eye school in New Jersey can legally be called "Seeing Eye Dogs". Also, I have been blind since birth and it is not "very hard to do things". Just because it is hard for you to imagine how a blind person would do many things, does not mean it is hard for a blind person who knows what they are doing. To another reader, I really hope that if you ever become blind, god forbid, that you do not just pick a guide horse over a guide dog because of this book. You can't have guide horses if you live in the city. They are bigger, more expensive to care for, and can be more skittish than guide dogs. You cannot fit a 120 pound animal onto most transportation and guide horses, unfortunately are not capable of being fully and completely housebroken, like dogs. Just so you know almost no one uses guide horses. For a very small percentage of the blind population, guide horses can be a very good fit, but guide dogs or white canes work best for most people. Oh, and the shoes are not cute, they are a pain in the butt. If I had to constantly be putting shoes on my guide dog and taking them off every time we enter a building, it would be a waste of my valuable time.
