And how did it negatively impact the lives of early 1900's Canadians?
It's for a history project at school. Thanks for the help!
Guide dogs weren't "invented" in the early 1900's. They've been around for centuries. What changed was the formation of formal schools to train guide dogs to serve veterans of WWI blinded in their service.
I don't think there is a significant difference in the impact then versus now. There are other ways for a blind person to travel under their own power without a guide dog, specifically the white cane. The cane and the guide dog are very similar in the functions they perform. Key differences are:
1. the guide dog can identify not only obstacles below the waist, but obstacles above as well, such as low hanging branches.
2. the guide can offer suggestions for routes around obstacles. For example, if the dog sees it's more than a pothole and is an actual construction zone, he my suggest turning to a side street rather than walking around the obstacle. It is still always the blind handler's responsibility to make the final decision on which way to go, but a cane isn't going to offer suggestions.
3. the guide can indicate obstacles at a greater distance than the cane, and can anticipate moving obstacles.
4. the cane is better at identifying the shape and texture of an obstacle for identification.
5. the cane is much less expensive to keep and requires much less maintenance.
6. the cane takes up much less space. It can be stored in a closet when not in use.
Since use of a guide dog is a personal choice, it should have no negative impact on the blind person. It's either a good option for them, or it isn't. For most blind people, the white cane is a better choice. For some the guide dog is. They go through a lengthy and intense training period. It should be quite obvious to the person before they ever take the dog home whether it is a good choice for them.
As far as impact on other members of society, it should be minimal. A well behaved, well groomed guide should have little impact on those around him.

Why is it that dogs are looked down upon in the so-called Muslim world ? Why has tradition made it so difficult to keep a dog in your home ? Why would a "Muslim" Taxi driver refuse to allow a blind man and his guide dog into his cab ?
How do we know that Muslims are not forbidden to be around dogs? We look at God's word, at the Quran. In the story of the men of the cave in Sura 18, it becomes clear that God sees dogs as part of men's lives.
18:18 "You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst."
Hadith tells us that angels won't enter a room where there is a dog. That means that for 309 years that the sleepers were in the cave, no angel ever entered. Yet God says "We turned them...." The use of "we" clearly indicates the participation of angels. There is absolutely no reason to mention the dog as part of this story, except to make it clear to future generation that dogs are permitted to live among people, right "in their midst." And 18:22 clearly shows that the dog was counted right along with the believers.
Yet dogs have always helped man through history, as the Quran attests in 5:4
"They consult you concerning what is lawful for them; say, Lawful for you are all good things, including what trained dogs and falcons catch for you. You train them according God's teachings. You may eat what they catch for you, and mention God's name thereupon. You shall observe God. God is most efficient in reckoning."
Yet according to Hadith, anything a dog touches must be washed seven times, the final time in dust. That seems inconsistent with the Quran saying you may eat what they catch for you. The beautiful bird brought back proudly in the Retriever's mouth would have to be washed seven times, finally in dust. It does not sound very appetizing.
Dogs are wonderful creatures of God. They bond with humans, protect them and serve them and that has been true almost since God placed man on earth. Does it make sense then that Muhammed (or any messenger of God) would place prohibitions on these loving creatures when God does not ?
i_heart: I'm not Christian because I don't believe in the bible, yet I'm a preacher of Christianity?!
There is shahih hadith that a dog passed thru the masjid....and then everyone just prayed as normal. If the dog had been so unclean then the masjid would have had to be washed? There is even one of the madhabs that says dog saliva is not impure, 3 say the hair is not...etc etc. There are other intrepretations of the dog and angel hadith etc. There is hadith that if u keep a dog for other than protection or hunting you get some reward deducted each day. We as a society do indeed spend tooo much money pampering our pets when children in the umma are starving...maybe this is where some of it comes from? I have had dogs for guarding and would continue to do so, but i wont buy them, just rescue from shelter etc.....Allah knows best

Keeping a dog for a pet and companion is fun to do. Though it seems that there isn't much about keeping dogs for a pet, it actually takes more than feeding, grooming and keeping your dog happy. There is even a lot of thinking involve the way you train them and keep them fit. Aside from the daily nutritional needs of your pet, you also have to make sure that they have their regular check ups.
Choosing the breed of dog you would love to keep involves thinking. And if you are the type of person who would like to be keeping a dog for life, then looking at specific areas of concern other than how a dog looks have to be considered. Ask yourself important questions first and whether you can be capable and worthy to be called a responsible pet owner.
But what about Boxers? What about them? These are dogs that doesn't are considered as guard dogs for they symbolize strength, agility and awareness when strangers are around. They are highly recommended for security purposes. If you are eager to make sure that an attentive pet is around for you, Boxers are a great choice.
During World War I, Boxer dogs were used as military dogs. Primarily, a Boxer dog's task was to be the guard dog but other military works such as being the messenger and attack dog was also common. Because of this, their strong and athletic physique remains incumbent up to now. These dogs physical attributes have made this breed important in aspects where help is important. Throughout history, the Boxer had been counted on for jobs such as, other than being in the military, guide dogs for the blind, herd dogs (usually for sheep and cattle), and even as police dogs.
In domesticating a Boxer, it is important not to deprive them of their physical activities. Any dog needs physical exercises. Walking at the park is one simple way to do this but a Boxer dog would appreciate it if you run alongside them. This isn't only to maintain the athletic state that your Boxer has, but, it's most valuable to maintain their health in good state.
Keeping a Boxer dog for a pet involves a lot of work but it doesn't mean that it's not fun. Just like us, these dogs have their own needs and it goes out to all the other breed of dogs in the world.

I want to give myself some vacation in the city, get out of the house and enjoy doing new things and going new places. I can't decide where to go, though...
I live in North Carolina, near Fort Bragg, and have lived in many places....I'm a military brat, and now a military wife. But there are many places I have never been, so I want to visit more places. I wouldn't mind going somewhere I've already been, though, so that's why I'm not listing where I've already been...I'm sure going again would give me a differet perspective.
I like going into the big cities that have subway/metro/trains for public transportation. This is what I love about Washington, D.C. best. I'm considering going to D.C. again, but I lived there, and have been all over D.C. so don't know what to do that's new there...
I like museums, historical houses, amusement parks, and anything exciting, especially if it's history-related (medieval more than anything else, but I also like colonial a lot). I'm not big into night clubs and bars, and like coffee shops. Also, I am legally blind, so would need a city that is blind-friendly (I use a cane, not a guide dog, for now),, and maybe somewhere that I can easily find a temporary aide while I'm there, a personal tour guide? I'm married, but am going to take this vacation on my own, because I do like doing things on my own sometimes, and this way I can do anything I want, and we don't have to figure out his leave for it.
Where should I go on vacation? I am thinking between May and August (maximum of a week of vacation), and am not sure of a budget, yet, though I think it will be around $1k.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Also, are there any travel guide sites for the disabled, or specifically for the blind/visually impaired? That'd be cool.
NYC has everything you are looking for and then some. Tons of history. World class museums (The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be of great interest to you with the hall of Arms and Armour http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/ar ms_and_armor).
If you look, I am certain you would be able to do it for about your budget. You may not stay IN manhattan but you'd be close enough to take advantage of the subways and trains. I don't know about guides. As for the blind friendly part, despite popular belief, New Yorkers are some of the nicest people you will meet. Rather than just getting out of your way, many will be more than happy to help you get where you are going.
Have an excellent trip wherever you go!!

Nice Dog Rottweiler
The Rottweiler , or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“ Butchers Dog “), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog”breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.”
The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed.
