Putting a dog to sleep with no cause?? How do you feel about this?

Well long story short my uncle has a very old Dalmatian that he has had since it was a puppy but was used basically as a guard dog. Well the dog is old and has arthritis and some hip pain. Which you all know could be fixed with some arthritis medicine. Its about 10 years old i am not exactly sure.

He also has i think about 3 or 4 other dogs. Well about a month or 2 months ago. One of his inside dogs. His small breed dog. Got out and got to Gavin(The Dalmatian) Gavin went for it attacked the small dog and tore one of its eyes out of its head. Well they called me and said "OMG what do we do!." They know i am the dog person. The animal lover of the family and my family if they have any animal problems or need help call me. I rush over there and take there dog to the vet for them and get it treated. Well after a month or so the dog got out again and the same thing happened. Gavin tore the other eye out. Now the dogs blind.

Anyway. To me they are VERY bad dog owners. I don't blame Gavin at all! his WHOLE life he was put in a backyard. What do you expect from him? He doesnt know what to do with the small dog he could have just been playing with it.

So anyway they also have a few dachshunds in there backyard and there tied up on one side of the yard. So they have 3 dogs in there backyard 1 small breed dog in there house and now they just bought a St.Bernard puppy. I think now they want to put Gavin to sleep because they have a lot of dogs and a lot of mouths to feed and plus they have themselves a new guard dog the St.Bernard puppy.

They called me and said they wanted to put Gavin to sleep. They said "how do we do that?" I told them they would need to get a hold of there Animal Shelter in there city. They didn't know how to do it so i did(of course). I called and i asked how much etc. I told my Uncle to bring Gavin in and they will do it for a small fee. But i did talk to them and asked them "why? put him down" etc etc. But after a while of trying to convince them to keep him alive cause there is no reason to put him down etc. I stopped try to convince them. Reason being is because i started to think about his quality of life. He walks around a backyard all day. Thats it. He has arthritis which i know can be cured but they will probably not get the meds he needs. So i thought well if he was living a good life i would have stopped them from putting him to sleep. But i didn't. I did it for Gavin. When he passes he will be free. He wont be this hurting guard dog that sits in a backyard all day he will be free from all of it.

I feel good about my decision in not stopping his owners. But then again i cannot stop thinking about it. Do you agree i made the right decision???

NOTE: They haven't put him down just yet but will do soon in the next hour or so. I will not be there. They live far from me.

Thank you. Sorry for this being so long i wanted to give you guys every detail. Thank you so much!
Yes i agree with you all! They do not deserve to own animals. I will call on them. Although i do not think the Animal Control will do anything. This is there law- A dog must be in good weight and have proper shelter. All there dogs do. Not to sure if there can be anything done. There not breaking any laws. Its just so sad. He is a sweet heart to.

As for the rescue. I talked to the vet and he said that because of his age and his health. The chances of him finding a home are slim! I thought of that one to. But again. I think he will be free from it all. Its heartbreaking though.
I would love to take Gavin in. But i have 3 dogs, 3 cats and 2 bird myself. Plus Gavin is not good with small dogs. If you go on my profile there is a link to my real profile. There you can see my dogs there all small breeds. Not sure if Gavin would be good with them. Also they live really far from me and they will not be willing to give him to me. Its heartbreaking i know!! I just don't think there is anything left to do. I am glad you all agree that they are bad owners! I will surely call not sure if it will help.
To: Debra..Thank you so much for your input! Some how they state that there small breed dog got out and went straight to Gavin. They said they could here something happening outside and they opened the back door and there small dog came running to them with its eye hagging out of its head. They didn't know what to do! *I* had to take the dog. Then it happened again!! I was very mad at them! Now the sweet little dog is blind!! I blame THEM not Gavin. To the other question. They have an old dog house that only one of the dogs use. They also feed them left overs NOT dog food. These poor dog do not know what love is. I am and will call on them.
I am so sorry everyone i cannot choose best answer you all have touched my hearts. I will call. I to pray that he is not allowed anymore dogs and that he somehow LEARNS. Its sickens me i am hurt, i am just in a horrible state. I hope something is done. I hope Gavin is happy. He was put down and from what i heard went peacefully with loving vets showing him what love was. His last few moments of life he had loving vets petting him and talking to him. Thank you all there is no way i can express my gratefulness and how happy i am to have such good dog loving people on here to help me through my worst of times. You guys all rock! Gavin is at the Rainbow bridge and is having the time of his life! I am very happy for him. Thank you all! Words cant describe.

My first impression was to say that you could offer to take the dog in stead of having him put down. After re-reading your post, I do see your point. The dog's quality of life, if I may be brutally honest, sucks. I agree with you. He will be free from his owners.

Now that this is out of the way, I have several other questions. Gavin tore another dogs eyes out? What is being done for that poor dog? The dogs are all outside, unsupervised long enough for Gavin to yank the eyes out of a dog? Where was your uncle?????

Your uncle has got 3 other dogs outside and 1 small one in the home, right? He can hardly properly care for the dogs that he has now. He doesn't sound much like a "dog person" himself and has another puppy??? This does not seem right. In my humble opinion, I would make an anonymous complaint to the the SPCA and tell them how your uncle is treating (or not treating) his current dogs. I feel terrible for the blind dog (with no eyes), the new puppy and the other dogs he currently has. Gavin is blessed. Soon, he will be out of pain and far away from his terrible owners! I feel sorry for the other dogs.

Is there a law in your uncle's town that states the max number of animals one family can have?? Does he provide adequate food, water and shelter for the outside dogs. Is it too cold where he lives for the animals to have a good quality of life, outside alone and unsupervised??? Your uncle sounds like a "hoarder" This is not right!

Posted later:
I will pray for you and Gavin. I hope that, somehow, your uncle's heart is softened and he will find another way to get poor Gavin off his hands, as it were.

If Gavin is put to sleep, I will pray that your heart is lightened, that you know that you have done all that you can and that you, someday forgive yourself.

For poor Gavin, I pray that he is free of pain, that he feels the love that he should have felt his entire life. I pray that his restless spirit calms and he is able to be at peace.

For your uncle, might I suggest a long walk in his back yard WITHOUT his undershorts, a dog could come over to him and yank one of his nuttzies out, slowly and then the other. As he is writhing about in pain, suggest that you might be able to get him to the doctor but you think it would be best to put him down. He has gotten a lot more cranky in his old age and you are just plain tired of him!

Please, please, for the safety of the other dogs, locate the number of the SPCA in your area and make a call for the sake of the dogs. If they are so very willing to forsake Gavin, what will happen to the other dogs in their care? For starters, it is unhealthy for dogs to eat only food that is not nutrient specific for dogs. They are terrible pet parents!

Please let us know what happens. I'll pray for you all!

Saturday...I have no idea if you'll read this. But I felt compelled to write this and offer prayers for everyone involved...cried when I read your most recent post. You're right, poor Gavin is loved now as he should have been loved in life. How sad his life must have been. I know he will find his true spirit, love and comfort on the other side of the bridge.....

Heavenly Father, please accept your faithful servant, Gavin into your loving arms. Grant him the love, comfort and joy he sorely lacked on earth. Show him mercy for all his misgivings. Please release from the pains of his earthly body and grant him peace for the rest of time. Show him the love that his earthly parent had not and grant him joy...I pray this in the name of your son Jesus Christ

Heavenly Father, please grant your faithful servant, "Miracle Paws", peace in knowing that she tried to save Gavin from his terrible living environment and give him a safe place to live out the rest of his days. Please ease her heart and give her the strength to stand as an advocate for the other animals that Gavin lived with. Please support her in all that she does in your name. Please protect her from all forces, both seen and unseen, place a hedge of protection around her and give her comfort and peace...I pray this in the name of your son Jesus Christ

Heavenly Father, for the vet that helped Gavin cross the rainbow bridge, grant him peace and comfort in his duties, help him provide comfort to your furry friends when they are sick or dying and grant him a kind touch in all that he does...I pray this in the name of your son Jesus Christ

Boxer Dogs
It is believed that the boxer dog came from the European line of dogs and some believe that a few decades in the 19th century, about the 1830’s, the Browbeater Bullenbeisser was supposed cross breed with an English bulldog in Germany, which may very well prove to be the breed’s birth certificate. Since the Brabanter Bullenbeisser didn’t hold all of the new breeds characteristics this is hopefully the starting point for the history of the boxer dog.
The boxer’s physiognomy and personality are closer in line with the English bulldog than the Belgian hunting dog. The boxer’s traits are for certain taken from the Bullenbeisser.
Boxer’s become popular in the late 1860’s when an organization by the name of German boxer Klub started setting standards on how a pure boxer should look Boxers have a square in shape and medium builts they are muscled dogs, with curved thighs and well arched toes. The head is clan without deep wrinkles exempt on the forehead when ears erect. They mostly have dark brown eyes. They weight anyway from sixty-five to eighty pounds as a male and fifty to sixty- five pounds as a female. They range in height as a male from twenty-two to twenty-five inches and as a female twenty-one to twenty-three and a half inches.
The boxers ears are cropped to enhance its hearing because of this it makers for a great guard dog. Boxers have a short coat of hair witch doesn’t protect them from the extreme weather keeping these indoors as a housedog us best for them. They come in basic colors of brindle, tan, stag red, or black with strips. They are known for their beauty marking or flash. A Bindle boxer is the most common color with white near the nose and threw the middle of their nose.
A white boxer is not a rare species of boxer’s. A white boxer is normally Born when to dog’s that have a family trace of white boxer’s in their blood then there is a higher chance of being white. A white boxer has a higher rate of getting sunburn than a brindle or any other color.
A boxer is a highly intelligent greed of dog which makes them easy to train in most cases. Training should start the dog is thirteen to sixteen weeks of age. These dogs are basically trained to be guard dogs. Boxers are very stubborn which comes in very helpful when training them. You have to train these dogs in a playful. Exciting way and it is more likely to listen. The main aspect of training for a boxer is socialization by nature, boxer dogs are working dogs and because of this they have been trained as hunting dogs, police dogs, seeing eye dogs for the blind, guard dogs, circus dogs, courier dogs on the battle fields during world war two to name a few.
There is a club for boxers and their owners called American kennel Club (AKC) allows the dog and its owner, each dog is given a number once they are entered into the AKC and that number goes a long with them and their family. The dog must be registered and must be able to hear and see. The boxers first was inducted to the American Kennel Club was in 1904 and his name was Arbulf Grandenz and the number the AKC gave his family and him was 78043.
When entering a boxer into dog competitions they have to be brindle color with white markings when present, must not exceed one-third of their ground color. Boxers with black or white ground colors, or entirely white or any other than fawn or the two types of brindle or disqualified from the competitions but may still enter into the athletic and agility courses.
Official standard for a boxer is for him to be medium size, sturdy, square build with a sort back and their coat should be tight-fitting and shiny and his limbs should be strong and sturdy allowing him to be able to run for a farther distance.
His maculation well developed, should be clean, hard and appear smooth (not bulging) under taut skin. His movement should denote energy. The gait is firm yet elastic, the stride free and ground-covering, the carriage proud and noble. The beauty of the head depends upon the harmonious proportion of the muzzle to the skull. The muzzle should always appear powerful, never small in its folds in its relationship to the skull.
The boxer is a normal dog that is nice around other people even stranger’s unless they are after a member of your family or a person that has been around the dog long enough for them to understand that they are very good friends, and when someone if being hit by a stranger to the dog the boxer will attack them until they stop. Boxers can be overprotected but it can also be useful to you when you are walking them around and walking in an area that u are unfamiliar with. With them being overprotective too much you must be able to be control them fast our they will over power you and you cant control them.
When a boxer is young you should potty train them during eight to sixteen weeks because it will be too hard for them to learn after twenties weeks. Using old news p

OK, it's not bad.

The main problem is you've copied some information off the internet and it's VERY obvious. This is officially called 'plagiarism', and is cheating. Your teacher will find out and fail you. All you need to do is rephrase the bits you've copied and pasted, then it becomes legit.

For example, do you really expect your teacher to believe that you wrote this: "The beauty of the head depends upon the harmonious proportion of the muzzle to the skull".

Come on mate, you can do better than this.

Should dogs protect and guard his owner and property?

I here a lot of people getting crap from people enquiring
about training a dog to protect his home and I don't even think that the people making the comments even really examine the statement they are making. I herd this one lady say "dogs should be family dogs not for guards, if you want a protection get a bodyguard". I think dogs should be about family, just like a husband's about his, and part of that responsibility is to protect that family correct.
Now suppoose you went on a business trip lefted your wife and 2 daughters at home, a burgalar breaks in your house cause he knows your gone, your family's sleep in their bed you have 2 full grown lovable pittbulls who wags their tail when they see him he robbs you blind, has his way with your wife kidnapp your kids for ransom (God forbid) but! you would have those dogs put to sleep at best when you got home. And if you disagree your not even being honest with yourself.

I have a Pit that is very lovable and friendly with everyone when we're with her on a leash , she's still a puppy and we found out last night that she freaks out when someone knocks on the door and rattles the door knob.. she's 5 months old and sounded like she would protect her family
I would love her either way but I'm glad she alarms when strange things happen.. we live out in the country and it's just my wife and I.. If I'm not home my wife will feel a bit more secure knowing the dog will bark.
A barking dog is way more affective then a bugler alarm. That is assuming you made it all the way to my house without being noticed by me or my wife. being armed and having the knowledge to use it is very important when you have no neighbors.

Most people don't want to mess with a barking Pit now do they? Although a silent standing staring pit is even more scary. game on but training the dog to know the difference in who is game and who isn't is key

Why would 7 y.o. bull-mastiff certified guard dog start pooping in front of the outside entry gate to my home?

My dog is a professionally trained certified service dog whose service to me is guarding. She can accompany me everywhere I go, just as a seeing eye dog can accompany a blind person everywhere in public - restaurants, shops, planes, etc. She has a nice fenced in grass yard to poop in, and she has always done so. For the last week, she has started pooping directly in front of the entry gate on the side walk, instead of in the grass as she always has. There is no obvious change in the grass to me, no change in her environment, climate, or diet, everything is the same as always. What is she trying to communicate to me? Is she marking her territory against a danger she senses?
In response to the answer that addresses how interesting the question is considering that the ADA requires a medical disability:
Not all medical disabilities are physical. After being raped and assaulted multiple times both as a child and adult, I developed the mental disability called agoraphobia. The dog was donated to me because I was unable to leave my house bc I was afraid of being attacked again. Now that I have a guard dog as a constant companion, I am able to go to work and leave my house like any other person is able to do. Its a progressive innovative way to treat a common disability that occurs in women who have been aggressed upon in extreme ways. Instead of throwing us away, dogs can help us remain contributing members of society that live active lives. I am a professional with advanced degrees in multiple disciplines. It would have been such a tragedy for me to have been confined to my home because of the trauma others imposed upon me. Thanks for your answer.
As I said the grass has not changed, so grass length or treatment is not the issue. Checked her paws thoroughly as well - nothing there. Even if that were the case, what is the significance of pooping directly in front of the entry gate? Its a long sidewalk - she could poop anywhere on it if the grass or her paws were the problem.
I politely addressed your rude inquiry into what my particular disability is that requires me to have a service dog by adding additional details to my question. As someone who has supposedly worked with people who have disabilities and service dogs for so many years, you should really know better than to ask what my disability is. That is a common embarrassing question that people who have assistance dogs get asked. Would you like to tell everyone what your disability is that prevented you from having any sensitivity or social etiquette, yet alone professional knowledge about how dogs are used given what you do for a living?
But thanks for asking, it gave me an opportunity to educate people not just about how dogs are used, but about the devastating impact that rape and assault can have on a woman. Now you know.

Wow.. interesting question..

I've never heard of a Service Dog whose job description is guarding... I'd love to know what medical purpose that has since the ADA requires that a service dog fulfills a medical necessity.

I'd be taking a look at both her feet (for injury) and the grass (length, lawn treatments etc) to see if either were the issue.

One nice thing about poop on cement.. its easy to pick up!

Edit: I wasn't being rude.. nor did I inquire about the nature of your disability. I asked what purpose the dog serves. As someone who trains Service Dogs as well as uses one myself I am quite cognizant of what the laws state.

You could have easily gotten your point across by simply saying she's a "Psychiatric Service Dog".-- however, that doesn't say anything about "guarding" which is a description of a service activity I hadn't heard used in all the 15 years I've been training, attending seminars etc.

I was merely curious and wished to learn more...

I seriously didn't/don't care about your disability, my interest was in what purpose the dog served... especially since "guarding" is so atypical and can have connotations that the public wouldn't understand.

As someone who uses a Service Dog for a disability that is not always apparent I can definately understand how the many times people are confronted/questioned/harassed can make them defensive.

would this persuade you if you were my mum to get me a dog.?

please could i have a dog ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

PLEASE READ THIS I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THIS: DONT JUST IGNORE IT PLEASE READ IT.

I WANT A DOG MORE THAN YOU WANT TO WIN THE LOTTERY.
I WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR A DOG. I WOULD EVEN KILL MYSELF BUT THEN I WOULDNT BE ALIVE TOO SEE MY DOG.
I WOULD BUY EVERYTHING EXCEPT OF COURSE THE DOG BECAUSE I WOULD NEED A LITTLE BIT OF HELP PAYING FOR IT. I WOULD BUY THE COLLAR FOOD, FOOD BOWLS AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT.
I LUV BILLY SO MUCH AND I WOULD LUV TO HAVE ONE OF MY OWN.

PLEASE MUM I AM BEGGING YOU SOOOOOO MUCH. I WOULD WALK IT EVERYDAY , FEED IT EVERYDAY, TRAIN IT AND PLAY WITH IT. OH MY GOD I WANT IT SOO MUCH. I HAVE DONE SOO MUCH RESEARCH ON THE BREED OF DOG I WANT THAT MY HEAD IS SOON GOING TO EXPLODE. IF YOU DONT THINK THAT I CAN LOOK AFTER A DOG WHY DONT YOU TAKE ME TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER AND LET ME HAVE ONE OF THEIR DOGS FOR A WEEK OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT OR ASK SHAUN IF WE COULD LOOK AFTER BILLY FOR A WEEK JUT TO SHOW YOU WHAT I CAN DO. OR ASK DAWN IF WE COULD LOOK AFTER TOBY FOR A WEEK.

I KNOW HOW TO TEACH A DOG TO SIT, STAY, LAY, BEG, PAW, FETCH, JUMP, AND LOADS MORE. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME LIKE I SAID LET ME LOOK AFTER A DOG FOR MY SELF.

Keeping a dog for a pet and companion is fun to do. Though it seems that there isn't much about keeping dogs for a pet, it actually takes more than feeding, grooming and keeping your dog happy. There is even a lot of thinking involve the way you train them and keep them fit. Aside from the daily nutritional needs of your pet, you also have to make sure that they have their regular check ups.
Choosing the breed of dog you would love to keep involves thinking. And if you are the type of person who would like to be keeping a dog for life, then looking at specific areas of concern other than how a dog looks have to be considered. Ask yourself important questions first and whether you can be capable and worthy to be called a responsible pet owner.
But what about Boxers? What about them? These are dogs that doesn't are considered as guard dogs for they symbolize strength, agility and awareness when strangers are around. They are highly recommended for security purposes. If you are eager to make sure that an attentive pet is around for you, Boxers are a great choice.
During World War I, Boxer dogs were used as military dogs. Primarily, a Boxer dog's task was to be the guard dog but other military works such as being the messenger and attack dog was also common. Because of this, their strong and athletic physique remains incumbent up to now. These dogs physical attributes have made this breed important in aspects where help is important. Throughout history, the Boxer had been counted on for jobs such as, other than being in the military, guide dogs for the blind, herd dogs (usually for sheep and cattle), and even as police dogs.
In domesticating a Boxer, it is important not to deprive them of their physical activities. Any dog needs physical exercises. Walking at the park is one simple way to do this but a Boxer dog would appreciate it if you run alongside them. This isn't only to maintain the athletic state that your Boxer has, but, it's most valuable to maintain their health in good state.
Keeping a Boxer dog for a pet involves a lot of work but it doesn't mean that it's not fun. Just like us, these dogs have their own needs and it goes out to all the other breed of dogs in the world.
