How do i convince my mom to keep my dogs?

I used to have a lab that my family cared for for like 10 years, named Goldie. We put thousands of dollars into surgeries and medical exspences her whole life. When she died, we adpoted another dog a year later. He was the perfect dog, didnt shed, could run with the best of them, didnt bark. He was amazing. I didnt want my mom to newture him, but she took him to the vet anyways and got him newtured. The next day he died. It was so sad. I couldnt forgive my mom ever.

Because we only had Winston for 3 months, the adoption agency let us get a dog for free. Instead, we got two. A blind dog named Travis, and ironicly his seeing eye dog, Dakota. I didnt want them at first, because i didnt want to get rid of them when we get attached. We all fell in love with them of course, but now Dakota has some bad liver disease. My mom is talking about getting rid of him, because of the bills. How do convince her that we cannot just abandon them, like their previous owner did?

If you get rid of Dakota - he will probably be put to sleep. Many shelters etc. just don't have the funds or time to deal with a special needs dog.

Are you old enough to have a job? If so...offer to contribute part of your paycheck toward Dakota's care.

Is your mom attached to Dakota? Could her talk of getting rid of him be -- not so much about the bills -- as she does not want to go through the hurt that comes with the death of a dog? By giving Dakota away - is she trying to spare herself that pain?

If so....try to re-frame it - Dakota loves you and your family very much. You are his pack. You are his pack leaders. He gets comfort and security from you. Now after all the time that he has given you unconditional love and needs you and the comfort that he gets from you - you want to send him away - separate him from his best friend (Travis) and his pack? Let her know that you understand the hurt is coming but now is the time for you to step up and pull together and really be there for Dakota. He gave you the greatest gift he could - his loyalty and unconditional love. Now is the time for you to return the gift and be there for him during his most difficult journey. Also let her know that you will be there to go through this with her.

As far as your dog Winston passing away goes - having him neutered was the responsible thing to do. It was in his best interest. If he passed away, it is not your mothers fault. She made the right decision.

How can you make for a successful adoption of a dog into a family where there already are two cats?

As much as it breaks my heart to separate from my dog, I must, for reasons too long to get into here. I would still see him twice a year. I posted before but now it seems things will be different. I will be giving my dog to my sister who knows him well. She loves him and he loves her. Still, I have concerns. My dog is 10 years old and blind. My sister lives in a small apartment with two cats. What's the best way to make sure everyone will be happy?

Unless the cats have been socialized with dogs, they will probably not be fond of the dog. At first, the cats will avoid the dog at all costs. The cats will probably be stressed for a while.
When my mom got a new puppy, her cat was extremely stressed and chewed through all of my step-dads stereo wires.
Because the dog is older and probably not extremely hyper, the cats will probably adjust quickly.
Just make sure that the cats have high places to go if they get scared and my mom also gives the cat time to be down on the floor by kenneling the dog, usually at night.
They might never really like each other but they will be able to co-habitat nicely.
Sorry that you can't have your dog anymore, I am sure she will be fine with your sister.

One of my Dogs (A rescue) is blind in 1 eye, the other waters like crazy and stains...Help!?

OK so, here is his story, he was badly abused and his eye was so infected he lost his vision. I adopted him and at the time of adoption he still had a touch of infection and was being treated. Now it appears he has dry eye (from what Ive read online.. he has tear stains down one side of his face only that are quite bad and sometimes develop an odor....) He has had it since I got him, but he was still being treated for an infection then too so maybe it was overlooked... can I use Visine True tears in his eye to see if it helps? I have used polysporin eye drops (as suggested by my vet)in his eye in case it is the beginning of another infection.... I think he may just have watery eyes so want to try Visine before taking him to the vet but want to know if it is safe.

Thanks
Kate

You truly are a wonderful person for helping the little guy out the way you have. I don't think I'd try visine though, if his eye has been watering for more than a day there is probably some underlying problem that the visine isn't going to help... Certain types of eye problems can actually be made worse by visine- that is for humans, I have no idea what it would do to a dog. Since he only has one good eye left I'd be extra careful.

Legally can I keep these animals?

I'm going to try to keep this is short as I can.
Two years ago I adopted a dog to a woman. Only to get her back last week I didn't even know it was the same dog till I saw her because the adopter changed her name and also the dogs name. She has finally said it was my dog. When the adoption took place she signed a contract stating that she would provide basic care, vet care, proper fencing/shelter and abide by state and county laws.
This dog is blind she allowed her to run free and she was shot. The dog lived but had a bullet in her arm for over a month we got it removed once I got her back. She was not current on shots on return and never got her shots for her. She also has a ear infection and worms.
I already told her she will not be getting the dog I gave her back. And she will not fight me on this. The problem is that there is another dog and two goats she DOES want back. The other dog isn't in bad shape other then it has no shots, wormy and a little thin.
A main concern is that this lady was almost homeless this is why I agreed to foster from the begining for her. She told me this could happen again. She does not seem sane. Two people one from a county animal shelter said one moment she would be fine next she would scream and pitch a fit for no reason. On her website she has talked about wanting to kill herself and about the fact that she does have PTSD and brain damage she has not seeked treatment for. She doesn't have a working car, has short term living arrangements, and has told us she has about thirty dollars to her name. She has several criminal charges for breaking and entering and resisting arrest. And outstanding fines for not getting her animals rabbies shots.
We are talking of filing animal abuse charges for my dog. I also called social services whom couldn't promise they even had the man power to go talk to her.
Legally do I have to give her the other dog and two goats back?
I am so afraid so afraid for the safety of these animals if I give them back I can see something bad happening. Its cold here and getting worse not a good time to be homeless for people or animals. I worry about this womans health as well but I don't know what else to do other then what I did by calling ss.

I think your screwed since you told her you were just watching them for her. Best chance to get these animals in a good home is calling animal control. they will probably confiscate them, but you may be able to readopt them..

Psychiatric Service Dogs?

I have severe chronic depression with occasional hopeless/ suicidal thoughts. I realized a while ago that I needed a dog, but at the moment I am unable to afford one because on top of the adoption fee my landlord also wants a deposit to allow one in the house.
Because of my condition I am unable to work.
I just found out about the psychiatric service dogs and this is the miracle dog that I need.
Does anyone know if there are places where you can get and train your PSD, like the dogs for the blind, and is there anyway to get financial help for something like this. I am in Ontario Canada. And I am going to talk to my doctor about this, but I am getting worse by the day. I need something to focus on to keep my mind occupied, so I want answers now, if you have them.
Thank you very much
Please don't bother to answer if you are going to ignore the actual question

It typically takes 18-24 months to fully train a service dog. Getting a dog from a program also typically takes years.

I think what you are really asking for at this point, what is a better answer for you, is an emotional support animal. They require no special training beyond good pet manners because they don't work in public places like service dogs do. You can adopt one wherever you find well behaved pets. In the U.S. at least pet deposits are supposed to be waived. I'm in the U.S. and am therefore more familiar with U.S. laws than Canadian, but here's a link to the Ontarian equivalent of the ADA: http://www.canlii.org/en/on/laws/stat/so -2005-c-11/latest/

You may find some additional information here: http://www.servicedogcentral.org/content /node/116

As I said, Canadian law is not my strong suit, but I think that in most or at least some provinces some sort of special ID card is required and your doctor might have to be involved in you getting that. It's what I've heard from some Canadian service dog users, but I don't know how accurate they are.

Before you do all of this though, you should sit down and work up a budget because dogs are expensive to keep. The adoption fee is usually the least of the expense. Here's an article with info to help you work out whether you can really afford a dog. A smaller pet might be more in budget.

Here are some lists of programs that train service dogs: http://servicedogcentral.org/content/nod e/262 There are very few that train PSDs and even fewer that train them in Canada.

They're going to tell you the same things I did as far as budgeting goes and ask you to prove you can afford to provide for the dog.

They're going to ask you for proof of disability from your doctor and a list of the things you cannot do because of your disability. A service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate a person's disability. Comfort, companionship, therapy, etc. aren't the job of a service dog. The way you ask your question, it really does sound like what you need is an emotional support animal, which you can get faster, IF you check the laws I mentioned to see if you qualify for that kind of protection in your province.

For financial aid you'll have to ask your program. It's extremely rare that it is available. Usually at best the program will assist you in doing your own fund raising.
