Cell Phones For The Blind

Answers

blind friendly cell phones??

heyy there!!
i just got my very first cell phone for my birthday on sunday. im really excited and happy that i FINALLY got one..lol. however, i have some major issues with it. im legally blind and the keypad on my phone is completely flat. the display (interior and exterior) are pretty much impossible to read...i can sorta make out the numbers though. so all i can basically do is recieve calls and send them if i get some help.

does anyone know of a more accessible phone? or has anyone else had the same problem?? i really want to find a way to make the cell phone industry make their phones more accessible because everyone needs a phone in this day and age.

thanks for your help :]

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

I would go to your service provider's store and ask them. I'm guessing you got something like the Motorola Razor, right? Those are flat and a pain sometimes even to me.

And if there's nothing in the way of easier to use cell phones, they should start making them. I know some do have the 5 button in the middle raised, but it would be nice if they had some with all raised numbers or something.

can i get a easy to use cell phone for my blind mom?

is there a company out there that makes cell phones for the blind? if so how can i get one for my mom?
she may be blind but her fingers arent paralized:) believe it or not she has tought herself how to play bingo on the machine and plays often at the bingo hall everyone is amazed but she refuses to let her blindness stop her from doing anything!! i just thought that since they make a home phone for the blind they might make a cell phone also :)

You should try AT&T. They have special softwares for mobile phones that are designed for blind people and those with poor vision.

AT&T's Mobile Speak is a powerful full-fledged screen reader with an easy-to-learn command structure, intuitive speech feedback in several languages, and Braille support that can be used with or without speech. Unlike other screen readers for mobile phones, Mobile Speak automatically detects information that the blind user should know, just as a sighted user would easily find highlighted items or key areas of the screen at a glance.

I am trying to find a good voice activated cell phone for my mom who is blind...does anyone know of a good one

My mom is mostly blind and I have been looking for a easy voice activated cell phone for her. I have looked at the razor but it is too hard for her, as is the blackberry. I found one called the coupe but it is not with at&t. I know that there are some out there but need help finding one. Thanks for any help that you could give a son to help his mother.

Hi Mardi G,

My mother-in-law is very near blind and can't dial a regular phone.

We got her the RAZR and she can use it fine. To place a call you simply flip it open, press the button on the top right and say the name. We had to laboriously help her train the phone to recognize her voice commands but now she has no trouble using it.

One thing I wish the RAZR had that it doesn't, at least not the V3 version, is digit voice dialing. That way if she knew a number she could say it to dial.

Study: Only 2.5% Can Safely Drive & Phone

A new study by University of Utah psychologists on the ability of people to operate a motor vehicle and talk on a cell phone at the time confirms what other studies have shown: Virtually no one can perform both tasks without impairing safety.

But it is not impossible, for a very select few: 2.5% of subjects (whom researchers dubbed "supertaskers") were able to successfully operate a driving simulator and chat on a cell phone simultaneously without noticeable impairment.

The study's authors say the findings may lead to further understanding of the brain's capacity, as it challenges current theories about multitasking and shows there are fewer of them than we might think.

Smartphones Turn Into Assistants For The Blind - looktel - Gizmodo

We've seen software and applications designed to assist visually impaired individuals in the past, but nothing's been quite what we're shown in this video. The LookTel software actually allows phones to recognize and audibly identify objects almost instantly.

The software does need to learn landmarks and objects, but after the initial setup it appears to be quick and accurate. If the real thing is as good as this demo video, then smartphones will become an incredible and—depending on the cost of the software—potentially affordable aid for blind or impaired individuals.
