What are some good books with blind characters?

It sounds like a weird quesiton but I've been trying to write a story about a blind person for awhile and haven't gotten very far so I was thinking it'd help if I found some good books that have blind characters. They don't have to be main characters, I just need some good resources. I've already read Jane Eyre, From Charlie's Point of View, Blindfold, and The Insult. Hopefully there's more! The above titles have helped a bunch so far so anymore would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Maximum Ride. Its different from the ones you mentioned, but it has a blind character who copes with being blind. Instead he uses his ears, not his eyes.

are there any books with blind main characters?

I am just curious, for some reason blind characters that play either major or leading roles in books or movies fascinate me. I cannot seem to find any books in which the main character is blind, and I was wondering if any are out there. I know there are at least two movies with main or major blind characters and those are Quest for Camelot and Blind Date. I was wondering if anyone here could suggest any books and or other movies.

How do blind people find books to read or do research?

I've never seen a "braille section" in a library, and all of the card catalogs are now on computers, so a blind person could not even look up a book. How do they do this? Braille books exist, but where are they and how are they able to access them?

Assistive technology for people who are blind is expensive but lots of it exists.

Many books are now available on computer, some on books on tape, and some in Braille. For research, most people - blind or not - depend on the computer. There are programs that can read out loud what is on the screen, and if you want a copy of what you heard can print it out in Braille via an embosser. In a library there are often embosser - or you can email what you want home and emboss it there.

When a person wants to write - they have many choices. For quick notes they can use a Braille slate. For more involved information they can use several different electronic devices where they can type in their notes in Braille. Laptop computers can be used.

I am not blind but I do work for a person who is. I type my work the way I want, then I use a program called Duxbury that translates it into Braille, and then I print it with an embosser.

She does the same, but her computer talks. If she presses a key it can say what key she pressed or a combination of keys tells her different information or makes the screen move up and down or whatever.

Fewer than 2% of the population now use Braille. Sadly it is becoming a lost science as more and more children are learning to use computers and less need for Braille.

For those who do read Braille books - they can get Braille books sent to them free from the National Public Library or any of their local libraries. Braille documents are sent free by mail as they are so much more cumbersome than regular documents.

There are volunteers who read out loud to people who are blind and do not read Braille. There are radio programs that regularly read specific newspapers or magazines on the air - so you can listen to your favorite newspaper or magazine read on a regular basis.

There is so much more - the world of Blindness has changed a lot with accessible reasonably priced technology. And it will only get better in the future as prices get lower.

An item that reads books to blind people?

My Grandmother is blind, but greatly enjoys reading. I heard of this item which I don't know the name of (not an audio C.D) which reads to people, but I can't remember the name. Her birthday is in two weeks and I would really like to get this for her =)
Can these items also read in a diffrent language because, unfortunately she can't understand English. She can only understand Russian so its this possible or not?

One such device is the Plustek Bookreader. Essentially it is a scanner that does OCR (optical character recognition) and then converts the text to speech.

If she has limited sight, you might also consider a device that is essentially a webcam that can greatly magnify text and place it on a laptop screen. The last link describes the expensive version but I've seen simpler ones.

I don’t have much to say tonight, having said that I will probably now blather on forever.

I listed the *crown jewel* of my rare & out-of-print book collection today. It is a copy of the very, very (2 verys) rare An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools by Gay Ann Rogers .

I was not even aware this book existed. I know the name Gay Ann Rogers, knew her to be an interesting writer on Needlepoint and Needlepoint Design. She has several books adapting Oriental or Tribal designs for needlepoint. Good Stuff.

I found this book while doing a blind search for other obscure books.
