I see different books online and various web sites that will teach you braille online. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this? Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.
What an interesting question! I did just that last summer, that is, I started.
I started by learning the letters of the alphabet. It was a humbling experience, let me tell you. There is a pattern to these dots.
Try to get a workbook for non sighted children, learning to read Braille. This way you learn the letters of high frequency first.
You have to learn, how to recognize the letters and how to follow a line. I had a teacher so it was a bit easier. I sure hope that I can continue.
Did you know that there are levels of Braille? Children learn the letters. When they can read well, they are taught a version that is something like shorthand so that they can read quickly. There are very definite conventions to follow though so that everyone can be on the same page as it were.
Hope this helps.
Good luck. It is fun.

Why do they not have braille books is the first thing you should figure out. Is the school neglecting their responsibility to these students? If so then that is a big problem and you need to get in touch with someone at the school to find out why they don't have their books yet and when they'll be getting them. DId they not learn braille? Another common problem for blind students is when they have a little eyesight, but not enough to really read print affectively, but since they have a little the school decides they don't need to learn braille. If this is the case there are a few alternatives. RFBD (Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic) can be contacted and they will provide books in audio format as well as a player for the audio books if the student doesn't already have one. Free of charge. As for writing, if the student knows how or can learn how to type, lessons can be done on a computer using ZoomText (screen magnification software) or JAWS (text-to-speach screen reader). If there are worksheets to be done you can type them up and e-mail them to the students. Work out a system of e-mailing assignments back and forth, or the student can simply save his/her work to a disk or print it out for you. I have a few friends who do this in their honors classes at one of the local highschools. Looking up vocab definitions can be done on a computer as well, or the student can use an electronic hand-held dictionary, but the school would have to provide one of those and if they haven't provided braille books yet it seems unlikely they will provide any other assistive technology. Computers is definitely the way to go. If you have any other questions or need specifics you can feel free to e-mail me at Gryfindorgirl90@aol.com. I am blind and have been my entire life, and I have a number of blind friends and contacts both in and out of school. We've all had to use alternative methods when we didn't have the materials we needed in accessible format. Sent me a message and I will do what i can to be of further assistance.
Ok so I live Tas in Australia, and I'm teaching myself braille. Does anybody know where I can buy some novels in braille?!
National Braille Press:
http://www.nbp.org/
(They have the entire Harry Potter series in braille!)
Brialle Bookstore:
http://www.braillebookstore.com/view.php ?C=Braille+Bookstore
(I found this website easier to navigate than the National Braille PRess website.)
Braille titles can get really expensive though, so you might want to check if your local library or a nearby university library has braille titles. I used to work in the children's section of a university library and I was surprised at the number of braille titles we had.
I want to learn braille just for the fun of it. But I want to know would it be difficult to learn Braille without help from someone who knows Braille really well?
And if you can include a website that can teach me braille that would be great as well ;DD

The Top Dumbest Reasons for Not Teaching Braille the Not Time Yet ...
If your house isn't burning right now, do you really need smoke detectors? If you have a good income, do you really need savings? If you know that "yes" is the answer to these questions, you already understand the faulty logic behind the Not-Time-Yet excuse for not teaching Braille.
Studies by the Jernigan Institute (Baltimore) link Braille literacy to post graduate degrees, employability and earning over $50,000 a year. Since the 1950s, when blind children started being mainstreamed into public school, Braille literacy has been declining. A shortage of qualified Braille instructors is the top reason listed by the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children. Parents, however,...
