For my Senior Project next year, I'm interested in learning how to read Braille, but I want to take lessons for it, not one of those online programs where you teach yourself. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this? If it doesn't work out, I'm also interested in volunteering at a drug/alcohol rehab center. Is this possible? Would they accept teen volunteers? Any help is appreciated!

Does anyone have any tips on teaching visually impaired children? I have no experience whatsoever, and the district will lend some help by providing an aid, but the aid will not be there full time. The student I will have in the fall reads and writes Braille. He is at grade level in math and reading comprehension, but what about the other subjects? And...how do I go about the daily routines? Any advice is highly appreciated. Mainstreaming at its best/worst?
i have a friend who is visually impaired, and its best if you dont draw too much attention to them. if you teach elementary school, keep it very hearing oriented and have any intructions transferred to braille. if you teach middle or high school, have the student take notes in braille and keep it hearing oriented. keep daily routines mostly the same, unless the student has trouble, then you may want to alter them slightly.

I have not yet been declared legally blind yet by my doctor but I cannot see anything and I was wondering if there was anyone in the Portage, WI area who would be willing to help me learn how to properly use my cane and maybe teach me how to read and write braille. I am naturally right-handed but since the stroke happened, I have no movement in my right-hand and have to relearn how to do everything left-handed. It would be wonderful if someone would get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you very much
I would contact VESID OR ANY PLACE THAT DEALS WITH DISABILITIES .THERE ARE LOTS OF FREE PROGRAMS.YOUR DOCTOR SHOULD KNOW THAT
My eyes are doing strange things. I have a book that explains the rules of Braille but I think I would need it explained to me so I learn it better. But if I had a video teach me how then their explanations would teach me better than trying to figure it out on my own. I hope I have explained it well enough... I put a similar question under Special Education because I don't know where to best put my Question...
you need to train your fingers to be able to read the bumps. Computers can't do that.

Don’t let the copyright date fool you! This book is a MUST BUY for any teacher who addresses braille instruction. Parents who are looking for ways to develop braille reading skills will also want to obtain this book! There are excellent suggestions for instructional strategies that work for beginning readers as well as students who may be learning braille as a back-up to print reading. A whole chapter is devoted to developing braille games. An Appendix includes an easy to use braille assessment checklist. I’ve been using this book since 1981 and refer to it often when presented with a new braille instruction challenge.
