Where can i get a bible in braille and text? And what activities can we play with blind and not blind kids?
2007-10-12_MG_9293

Hi, i help out at a local church for sunday school, and we have a small boy that comes now, but we struggle to find activities that he can partake in, as well as the other kids, as we don't want to leave him out, or the others.
I would love to know if anyone has any suggestions, or if you have any websites or anything that would be helpful, hopefully websites that allow you to buy things in pound sterling currency.

Also, we need a bible that is in text and braille, or just braille, what website would i get one from? as i can't find one locally!!!
Thanks very much for helping!!!

Wow.. I must honestly say that this is a new question that I have never seen posted before on YA.
As an interpreter for the deaf I am often asked for activities for the hearing imparied but never the blind. I assume this blind student can hear, correct? I think it would be a lot easier to find things to do with a blind person than a deaf... you can still tell Bible stories, listen to tapes, play musicial instruments and have a lot of tactile and sensory activities. See if kids (both blind and seeing) can tell what objects are in a box just by touching. Put a blind fold on the seeing kids and have all the students blind and non blind tell you what items are from smell (do not use strong smelling things like ether or amonia or colonge or cleaning supplies. use things like fresh fruit and vegatables, popcorn, scratch and sniff stickers.) Try ringing a bell from behind or to the sides of their head and ask them where the sound is coming from or perhaps use different instruments and ask them what they are.. or a recording of animal sounds. We did things similar to this (we didn't blind fold anyone) when I worked at a nursing home for Reality orinatation we tested all of their sensory skills. I always hated the one when we would put vanilla or some other scent on a cotton ball and put it by the persons nose, they always opened their mouth. I always felt bad, like I was teasing them or something. But you get the idea. Hope it helps.

Are there any colleges that have programs specializing in education of kids who are blind/visually impaired?

Does anyone know? I am considering it as a career choice as I love kids and am well versed in braille.

Southwest TX State University in San Marcos TX has an excellant Special Education program. SWTSU is not Texas State University.

Braille - German Resources and Books?
Share

My friend has a blind kid who is starting school next year. They speak German at home and since they live in Canada, there are no German resources or books, but they would like their kid to learn reading and writing in German as well as English. Any websites that you can recommend that would sell German Braille books for young kids?

The name is after Louis Braille, who invented it. If you want to see what it looks and feels like, most modern elevators have the floor-buttons in braille as well as visible numerals.
