In Louis Braille's time, what aids did visually impaired persons have?
Nacidos sin SIDA | Born HIV Free

I know the white cane was only officially used in the 1900s, so if anyone can tell me common visual aids of the 1800s, or what Braille himself used, that would be great.

You may find the National Federation of the Blind as an excellent source regarding the historical use of vision aids.

Where can I find information in Braille on STIs and AIDS/HIV?
Nacidos sin SIDA | Born HIV Free

That is such a good question! I'm glad you asked it! I don't know where you are so it's kinda hard to give anything specific. I would try my local government. They usually are responsible for providing these sort of services. Or your local hospital should be able to point you in the right direction. I'm sure they would be able to help. But it really depends where you are...

Can a job application be printed in braille?

I live in Texas and I work for a lighthouse for the blind. I was given a project to update our current job application, which is in large print. I also had the idea to create one in braille so that employees that are totally blind can fill one out without much aid of someone that can see. I think it is a good way for them to become more independent. I know that banks will send bank statements out in braille, but what does everybody else think?

That is a good idea.

You can print in braille, but you can't do that with a typical printer. There are printers out there to print in braille on the market which will run you $1000 and up.

What good can the Internet do for the handicaps?

Hearing aids have proven to be of great use for the deafs as the Brailles for the blinds and sign language for mutes. For many decades, the Braille system has opened up vast avenues for advancement for the blinds as much as any normal person would have. In today's hi-tech lifestyles the Internet is a necessary tool for practically everybody. Naturally, the handicaps too have their own expectations of the cyber world.

help with teaching visually impaired children?

Does anyone have any tips on teaching visually impaired children? I have no experience whatsoever, and the district will lend some help by providing an aid, but the aid will not be there full time. The student I will have in the fall reads and writes Braille. He is at grade level in math and reading comprehension, but what about the other subjects? And...how do I go about the daily routines? Any advice is highly appreciated. Mainstreaming at its best/worst?

i have a friend who is visually impaired, and its best if you dont draw too much attention to them. if you teach elementary school, keep it very hearing oriented and have any intructions transferred to braille. if you teach middle or high school, have the student take notes in braille and keep it hearing oriented. keep daily routines mostly the same, unless the student has trouble, then you may want to alter them slightly.

  • Braille Band-Aid Boxes - U.S. Seeing Textured Packaging for the ...

You might be surprised to find that in addition to the standard label, your next box of Band-Aids have Braille imprinting. An increasing number Braille-labeled packages are showing up on U.S. retailers’ shelves.

All pharmaceutical packaging destined for EU use is required to have information in Braille as of 2010, but the U.S. has no such requirement. In response, the International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking (IADD), an independent U.S. trade organization, has drawn up its own set of Braille standards for pharmaceutical packaging.

The labels finding their way to U.S. stores aren’t limited to prescription medications: Common brands of adhesive bandages and other medicine cabinet items sport the raised dots.
