Sitaram all,
I am a hindu living in the West Indies. I have taken up a passion for obtaining greater knowledge of Hinduism. I have several books on Hinduism and I even have a version of the Bhagvad-gita as an audio book. I am confused however about if the diet I have should prevent me from reading hindu religios books. My diet consists of consuming salt, meat, as well as the ocassional alcohol..should I keep away from these substances whilst I obtain knowledge about hinduism? I want to do this in the proper way...what would you experienced hindus suggest? Many thanks in advance
Thank you all, my hindu brothers. It is great to see so many points of view, but this is the point. Trashing out our ideas, even if they conflict ushers the way to find the truth! And this is what I want. In my country, most hindus take it for granted what our pundits/gurus/pandits say..and show no interest in doing their own reading, or research in order to find the truth. For example, most ppl believe that we must fast in order to get closer to Bhagwan..but this detaches me from my lord because most times we believe we arent purified to read scripture etc..and get closer to Shri Krishna. That is why i quest for truth, because I want to become closer to our Lord, and I do not want to become detached. Thank you all so much. My eyes have been opened, as I have learnt alot than I did..and it pushes me even further to acquire more knowledge and be truthful in service and truthful and effective, in the practice of my Dharma! ¤Jai Shree Raam!¤ Thank you all.
friend,
I am very much proud of you that though you are in west indies, you are interested to know about the Hinduism , of course you said you are a Hindu.but I have sen many Hindus in US especially not at all caring to know what their Hinduism tells. They do not know themselves , are unable to teach children too. their dress code and food habits and the nitya karmas they are bound to do are not even known to them.
Hinduism does not mean a purely vegetarian religion. It is a misconception.
Brahmins,Kshatriyas,Vysyas and Sudras are a part and parcel of HINDUS.And any one one from Kshatriya ,Vysya and Sudra can become a Brahmin by his conduct. That is clearly said in Bhagavath geeta , that the varnaas are based on Guna and Karma ..
Kshatriyas and Sudras are taking food both meat and vegetarian.
They are allowed to take it.but brahmins , who do some rituals are advised not to lead any pompous life. They live in very simple way, wear a single piece of cloth ,dhoti and a small another Uttareyam on shoulder and do Yagna Yagas for the benefit of all HUMANS and other living beings in the wold.
You asked about food.if you are not a Brahmin , you may take non veg food. But alchohol is not advised and shall not be consumed, for all Varnas.
If you want tor ead Bhagavath Geeta , read it ...no objection whatsoever.read any book.Understand Hinduism and the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.Read Upanishads ,they are available online in Internet.
If you want to do japa and concentrate on progressing speedily it is advised that you take Pure Vegetarian food.it is saatvik and gives good and positive ideas.it releases negativity from you.
regarding fasting ...you can do it once in fifteen days.fasting does not mean starving the body, but you are permitted take a glass of milk two or three times to keep the body going.Body shall not be put to suffering.
hope the answer helped to some extent.
EDIT;
dear Indian, My answer did not say that any HINDU can eat beef.I take it for granted that every HINDU knows the precious place of COW ( Go maata) , Oxen and their calves.
The Cow is not created by Brahma in the Creation.it is seperate subject and if are interested you may search and find answer. make trails.
We,Hindus treat COW,OXEN and their calves as the GODS.
330 million Gods reside in the Cow, if you are really a HINDU you know it.
Calf of a cow is called GO VATSAM .vatsa is a very affectionate term.It is used by a guru to call his shishya (disciple) or his students.
Only in three occations the Vatsa term is used,A Guru calling his student or disciple, Bhagawaan calling Bhakta and the calf of the COW.GO VATSAM.
In no other occasion one shall not use the term.
Eating beef or the meat of cow or ox is so sinful act in HINDUISM, there is no Praayaschittam for it .
I understand that that basic factor the questioner knows.
There are so many other animals and birds whose meat is allowed as I answered.
So do not inject negativity.Do not misinterpret any thing.if you do know, learn from books are elders who know about HINDUISM.

My Grandmother can't see very well anymore, she has some sort of eye condition, because of this she doesn't have a license anymore and can't drive herself to any 'activities' for older people I've seen suggested when searching for an answer. She has audio books, but is very picky, she can't knit or crochet or any of those things because she can't see it anymore. Her hands are very shaky as well, she was recently in the hospital very sick with pneumonia and now has kidney problems and has to go to dialysis like 3 days a week and keep a strict diet. With all of this she's been getting very depressed, she feels bad for depending so much on other people to drive her places, sitting at home with nothing to do won't help her morale. So please, I beg you, if you have any idea of some sort of hobby or anything for her to occupy her time with, preferably without requiring the assistance of another person, I would appreciate it so very much, I'm really at the end of my ropes here, I don't mean to sound desperate or pitiful but I just want to make my Grandma happy again.
You might also want to check out the "Disabilities" page at my site, under a few of the categories in particular:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/disabiliti es.htm
(My site is mostly about polymer clay, but many of the suggestions could be done with air-dry clays too, and there are also just general ideas and links that might be helpful too.)
The categories I was thinking of in particular would be:
...Eyesight
...Seniors & assisted living & Stroke,etc..
...Some polymer activities for all disabilities & needs
...Misc (for all topics)
There are also online, and sometimes local, groups that can help with ideas, activities, etc., and how to adapt them to people who have physical difficulties --some are on that page above.
HTH, and all the best!

so i have been having P.D. since early 2004, i would like to say the state of my panic has been neutral (because the first 2 years of having them i could not be without my loved ones, and i wasn't scared of curtain places, but now i can be without them and I'm scared of curtain places, funny isn't it lol) but yeah i get scared of stupid things (overcrowded places, being sick, the sun exploding, countless things) how can i treat this, i have a book about treating it and it said going on diets can help (i have not gone on one) deep breathing (have only done it for 2 months) and exercise (have not done) self talk (keep forgetting) also if anyone knows of a place where i can download AN AUDIO TAPE THAT HAS SELF TALK ON IT (such as "you have no fear" or "i can handle this") PLEASE LET ME KNOW????
A couple of things for you to remember:
No situation, place, sensation or thought causes panic. It's you doing it to yourself. You are consciously choosing to react that way. Next time you feel it coming on, realise that you can choose not to panic. Because that is, after all, what you don't want to do.
With the deep breathing, this is exactly how you should do it to reverse/abort an anxiety attack:
Breath ALL the way out slowly through your mouth, do this first, not second!
Now, let the in breath happen all by itself.
Repeat 2 more times and return to normal!
