All day at work I'm allowed to listen to music. I thought I'd give it a shot one day with the first Harry Potter book. Time melted away like butter. Since then I've listened to the whole series and just finished book 1 and book 2 of the Eragon/ Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini. I loved both. Does anybody know of any comparable stories or just any good fiction and/or fantasy AUDIO BOOKS they'd recommend I listen to? Thanks for all the suggestions
Thank you LJ K. I'll be looking to the earthsea one you mentioned. and thanks everyone else, but I specifically said FANTASY AND/OR FICTION AUDIO BOOKS. and i didn't ask for where to look either, i just wanted some PERSONAL OPINIONS on AUDIO BOOKS
oh yeah and i'm still open for more suggestions. please do conitinue
I would suggest taking a look through your local library for audio books. They are free to check out and I have found several good audio books there such as The Last Apprentice: Revenge of The Witch.
LibriVox provides free audiobooks from the public domain. You might find something you like there.

Since you go through a lot of audio books it sounds like you would benefit from an audio book club in which you can buy, rent, and/or download audio books. (And save you $$)

Oh, and don't forget to take a look around for free podcasts. They are a great way to past the time. You can find a lot of great ones at itunes

In the reviews I've read about the Official audio book people complain about the fact that it's an interview with the author and what I need is the audio of the text in the book for one of my students who happens to be blind.

in differentiating from the ones that have only voice of narrator .
I prefer audio books with full character voices , music , sound effects .
Have downloaded bundle of sample mp3s but all of them are just voice , I really dont like it anyways
Can anybody give me a hint ?
If you have experienced some very good audio books in such kind , please feel free to recommend me , thanks everyone
ah , what is "unabridged" in terms people used ?
Try searching for "dramatized audio books" to find sound effects and more than one reader. If you'll use that search string on Amazon, you'll come up with about 3 pages of hits, mostly religious texts but also some literary ones.
When a text is reproduced in full and nothing is edited or removed, it is called unabridged. Conversely, when the text is edited or parts are taken out for concerns of brevity, it is abridged. More than likely, dramatized audio books will be abridged because of the amount of time that it takes to add music and the pauses between speakers. For example, my copy of the unabridged, single-narrator Scarlet Letter is ten CDs; if it were dramatized, it would likely be twenty CDs.
With dramatized audio, you'll get most of the story, and based on what you've said, if you prefer sound effects and different actors for each character, you are more likely to retain the gist of the text than if you listened to an unabridged text read by one person without music.
Can anyone tell me how to get the audio of the book A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn for free? and if theres a way is there a way to start from a certain chapter rather than listening to the whole thing up until chapter 18? Best answer and best rating for the person who helps me out the most.
Check out your public library. Or you might also look on YAKiToMe! http://www.yakitome.com. If you find the electronic text, YAKiToMe! will turn it into an audio book automatically and for free.
This is something I don't understand.
Of course, they are necessary for the visually impaired, but why trade a hard copy for a CD?
For me it is much easier to actually read than listen to them, then my question is, why do that many people buy audio books instead reading?
Are audio books designed to encourage lack of culture and reading skills?
As you said audio-books are design to broaden the cultural skills of those who are visually challenged, but some lazy people see in them a way to cope with the "boring" habit of reading something out from People or Cosmo. Is not that technology is designed to make our lives viciously easier, we humans consciously take advantage of it as a lean-on device instead.

Strunk and White on audio: How The Little Book has changed | Jim ...
Having read “Strunk and White” over and over, I remember their admonitions to omit needless words and use the active voice. Like White, I am not always successful in my writing, but I strive to reach success in editing. On a recent visit to a cyberspace library, I saw “Strunk and White” on audio and checked it out. Listening to “Strunk and White” is challenging, especially catching the differences between examples read aloud while I navigate to and from work past slow moving trucks and watch for farmers leaving their fields to cross the road.
The audio version shows Strunk’s strong opinions better than the written text, but the written text helps readers to reflect on his rules and examples. Listening to the audio version, I wonder who these two men were. Strunk was a professor at Cornell, and E.B. White an author. Wikipedia tells us that Strunk taught for 46 years, but published only two books: “The Elements of Style” and “English Metres.” Strunk was more an editor, editing books by William Shakespeare, James Fenimore Cooper, and other authors. Strunk also worked in the movies, where he was a literary consultant on Romeo and Juliet.
