I didn’t know if you meant when it was invented, or when it became popular. Here is the order that they were invented.

Phono – first phonograph- Edison in 1877 – first turntable style 1892

Multi-track mastering – A little vague… thinking of Ampex’s "Sel-Sync" 1955?
Audio cassette - 1963 Phillips
8-track – 1964 Lear Jet

DAT – 1984-85 Sony/Phillips (ADAT Alesis 1991)

I currently use Fruity Loops 5 and am wondering what it would take to teach myself how to master audio production and what tools (hardware and software) I would need to get started. Any books and advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks, Mike L. I have both programs and am planning to mixdown both my albums using it...but I was wondering about what would separate me from professional audio mixing. Can I really do that w/ loops and audacity?

Well this is not necessarily a programming and design question but I'll have a go at it...

I played with Fruity Loops for a while (got a trial version on a CD that came with a magazine).

To get your feet wet in audio production, try ACID Express, fron Sony. It's a free version of a commercial loop-based audio package (and you will soon find you will want the features that are in the paid versions, but try the free one first). The Express edition is limited to ten tracks, so to build complex mixes without buying the paid version you may end up rendering multiple tracks to a single new track.

You can get ACID Express online.. it's a large download, though, so be prepared. http://www.acidplanet.com

Under tools you will find the link to get the software. You will also be able to download weekly "8 packs", free loops and a sample project. In fact, the 8-packs page also has thelink to download ACID Express.

There's another free audio editor called Audacity which you can find easily online. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I sometimes pick up a magazine imported from the UK called Computer Music, which often gives away software, loops, etc on the CD, and the pages contain lots of ifo on music production from beginner level to expert.

i have taken up running and i am now getting ready for a marathon. i would like a good audio-book so as to learn while i run but i can't find anything of value. all i find is (in my view)) mambo jumbo while i would like a top book, the kind of thing you study at university since i am trying to get into a master in business related subjects. any advice?

You could try buying from the Open University perhaps? I know you can re-sell the books after use so maybe try Amazon or something like it.
