I've always loved Shel Silverstein's works as a child, and still do. They ranged from humorous to serious and always had some sort of moral. I've bought most of his books and shared them with my daughter, and she likes them just as much. She, of course loves the poem books; Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic and Falling Up. But there is one book that happens to be my favorite and still moves me to this day, which is The Giving Tree. My daughter's school is doing readings for the homeless, where they will be making audio cassettes of recorded books for homeless children, and we both decided upon this book. I just finished reading reviews and had my fiancé read it. Most reviews hailed the book, but there were a few that shocked me, and my fiancé happened to agree with them. They claimed that the story is too sophisticated for a child and that it also sends the wrong message. They said that the story is that of an enabler, and instead of teaching children to have a good work ethic and learn to take care of themselves, it promotes bad parenting skills and further promotes immoral behavior in children. The tree gives everything it has, till there is nothing left but a stump, which the miserable boy sits on at the end. And if that wasn't enough, one review went on to point out how, after the tree had already given its limbs to the boy, to build a house, he was still not satisfied and had to run away from life, and came to the tree for its trunk to build a boat. In a word, this person was really not liking this book. I have to say, I didn't like one of my all time favorites getting trashed like this, but the reviewer did have a point I guess.
But there are two ways of understanding this story. When I was a child and read it, it drove me to tears, because I was relating with the tree. I can't help but think that this is the reaction that was intended. I would think that most children would have that same reaction,(whether they actually cry or not). So, in my opinion, the book is creating empathy and a greater understanding and respect for relationships, whether it be a friendship or the relationship we have with our parents. In other words, it's supposed to make children "think". Maybe my fiancé and this particular reviewer missed that point?
Your thoughts?
You are right in that the book is intended to make children think. The giving tree is a loving tree and it is actually representative of God, more than our parents. God gives us what we need when we need it. In the end when we need very little, we ask for less.
I never made that equation before you asked your question. I'm not a rabid Christian, but I can see that now.
On the other hand, I can see how some reviewers would think that the generosity of the tree was actually damaging to the child. I can also see the parallels between children, even grown children, who never learn to get by without help from their parents (and the parents who never can say no to them). I have many grandparents and parents visit my business to borrow money for their kids--money they have difficulty paying back.

Condensed Summary …about Money : 11 september 2009
Do you own ASSETS which bring money
or Liabilities which keep draining money life long ?
How many Assets you have , and How many Liabilities ?
EARNING huge amount is of no use, if U love to spend in luxuries , as income grows , proportionally spending also goes up, CHECK SPENDING, add Assets not Liabilities.
Your Love for spending is your biggest enemy , not insufficient income , because even if you get Rs 10 lakhs , your love for spending will not let you free , you will proportionally spend in various indulgences.
Who will be respected ..? A man who throws money to Prostitute or a man who makes divine love with his divine wife ? Who is more respected …a woman with lot of money and jewels or a Pious woman with lot of grace and simplicity ?
Learn to realize …..One who spends lavishly …will be scoffed and hated …do you want to be hated for your shameless behavior of indulgences ?
Respect Descent behavior and not flashy behavior.
Liabilities r those seeming assets which keep draining money lifelong, becoming huge burden : status / lifestyles , house loan , maintenance of vehicles, computer , nagging wife ……make a list and you will know what are all your LIABILITIES that haunt you throughout your life …so get rid of all unbearable LIABILITIES …..have Assets which assist and help you and not those that only harm you.
So lets make a list of our liabilities and let us flush them out of our life
…to have an asset called PEACE.
Best wishes.

This morning I almost wanted to jump through the phone-line and snatch up GLENN BECK's co-host Kevin Wall. The guy must be "gay" nothing against "gay" people but he said he loved cop's so much so that he believes that 99.9 % are good good and 99.9 % do the right thing. Then a Police Supervisor calls him on it. He now works as a Defense Attorney and yes he puts the screws to cops, Law Dawgs etc that try to lie, fudge etc the truth of a situation routine traffice stop, shoot or no shoot situation and so on. He was a cop for 25 yrs so he knows the life, walk and basically the soul of a cop. I too am a former cop. And for cops that don't believe what I am writing call Glenns show now 1-888-727-beck for todays show (Dec 30,2008) and listen to him go on and on with his "man-crush on cops" it scares me I don't want a cop groupie especially if it's another man. Hey admiration, respect, understanding giving us Kudos for cops doing a good job is one thing. But use some common God given sense to Kevin Wall. Maybe as they say back in the day cops did try to do the right thing. For me that changed after THE BEATING OF THE BLACK MOTORIST IN LA ,Mr. Rodney King as other cops watched and this was captured on video. Can you say idiots and morons!!! Yes that's me too. I got in trouble on an off duty altercation with a civilian and my gun off duty. No one was shot. I only showed him I had it. Most cops have what we call "back-up or onion field security" watch the movie (The Onion field ) any way. Hey Kevin if this makes you mad or cry or makes Glenn mad then sue me. I am broke right now so take a ticket and stand in line. But dude you are biased. I can name you many instances both civilian and military. At my post on Fort Jackson DA police (DEPT Army Police shooting at a fleeing car that was not involved in a felony and was leaving the Fort Jackson Post), Pepper Spray used on a Sergeant Major by DA Police incorrectly and against procedure. All real world incidents contact the Provost Marshall at Fort Jackson.2nd Abu Gharib enuff said Army MP's at the bottom and all the way to CID screwed up. Civil police examples: South Carolina :Trooper pulled and dragged an elderly woman out her car on a routine traffic stop (this is a joke video now used on television on a regular basis to show that cops can be stupid too). Third and most recent example: NAACP uncovered hidden or overlooked dash camera video from SC Highway Patrol showed Trooper cruiser ramming a suspect also with audio a trooper yelling a racial ephithet and kicking a handcuffed suspect that was on the ground. Third and forth. A former Major in Miami Florida (cop type) pulled over routine traffic stop he was in civilian clothes the jr grade cops tried to arrest him he then identified himself but the jr officer brushed it off no Professional courtesy or field booking for the major he ended up quiting or resigning he also took his case before a Judge. Last example in California a undercover sting officer many yrs ago was pushed through a plate glass window and critically injured by other california cops (crooked) when he went to the station to serve a warrant and arrest them. Of course I could go on and on. So now at least I have broken the so-called BLUE CODE OF Silence. As a former cop and like the 25 yr police inspector said on todays Glenn Beck show. Lots of cops come from all walks of life and they are not perfect some aren't even God or anything fearing. Todays mess up get fired, suspended ect for not following the procedure taught to every police officer, trooper,DOC,FBI,CID,Military cop that was taught to us at police academy and recently especially the use of the TASER that has caused Deaths yes TASER International you can lie cops sometimes lie so do you jokers. I hate to tell on my own maybe this will improve the force. Gates got fired Mark Furman etc and so did the Director of the Highway Patrol here in South carolina.
sign me
I use to be one of the good cops
No, I heard the same talk-show and Kevin was deliberately showing his bias as a way of inducing callers to discuss his (next week) jury duty summons, which is his first. He wanted to openly discuss whether others had disclosed their biases during voir dire and if that was useful getting on/off any juries.
Most callers related having disclosed biases and getting selected anyway.

Pride & Ownership: A Firefighter’s Love of the Job — Audio Book Review

Chief Rick Lasky takes a hard look at the fire service and finds it short on the only element that makes it effective: passion. Chief Lasky gives an upfront and honest criticism about the need to reignite the love of the job on every level, from chiefs and on down.
In his personal welcome to the audio book version of Pride & Ownership, Chief Lasky wrote: “The book is a living, breathing testament of how the fire service should be and the respect, honor, and admiration that it deserves. Whether you’re new to the fire service, been in it for years, or retired, it’ll get you fired up, the way you were when you walked into the firehouse for the very first time.”
