    Le Carre, well known for his thoughtful spy novels, had this one published in 2008. So, I am a bit behind in my spy novel reading. This story took a very long time to get going. The story is about a young mixed race British/African man, married to a very white rising star reporter. This marriage doesn’t last long, and is almost an aside in the story of Bruno Salvodor a brilliant intepreter of African languages for a British spy agency. When he travels to a clandestine island for a secret meeting with African warlords, Bruno’s conscience is awakened. Being called a “Zebra” seems to have a very strong effect on him. He is gripped by a determination to stop a senseless war and to please his congolese lover.  The tale heads down familiar paths as he tries desperately to stop more innocent black lives from being lost in what Salvo deems as a futile war. But, Government conspiracy abounds and nothing is as simple as it looks.
