Start iTunes, put in your CD but don't import it into iTunes yet.
Depending on whether the talking book is registered in the Great Music Database In The Sky (aka Gracenote) you will hopefully get chapter numbers, author and CD names filled in for you. If so then click on the Import CD box at the bottom right of the iTunes screen.
If you don't get details filled in then what I did was to put the author's name in the Artist column, the book title in the CD/album name column and for each chapter I put Chapter 1, Chapter 2 etc. in the Name column. Then I changed the genre to Books & Spoken. Also, in the Get Info > tab, I ticked Remember playback position and Skip when shuffling.
Alternately you could just select Audiobook in the Get Info > Options tab.

some headphones have outside noise dampeners on them. They won't be silent but the dampeners are the same mechanics police men and soldiers use when they are going to be in loud conditions.

I have downloaded a lot of talks and books on CD. Apparently the only way to do this is "as if" they were music CD's. Is there a way to opt these entries out when I want to use the music Shuffle feature? Or a different way to put them into iTunes? This is only a problem with entering this type of CD that I already own, not something I buy from now on.
The only way not to hear the song in the shuffle feature is to not sync it to your ipod because shuffle plays things randomly and doesnt skip anything specific unless you do it yourself...but have the entrie saved in another playlist so if u just wanted to specifically listen to books or talks. But regardless of where its put, the ipod in regular or shuffle mode plays everything
I'm considering an IPOD, but would like to know if I can transfer all my existing music CDs to it? Also would like to transfer talking books.
OMG this is too easy, yes absolutely!!!
1) you need to download itunes. (hope you have already)
2) insert your CD and Itunes should read the CD you just entered
3) select import, itunes will import the songs from your cd
you can even import the whole CD by selecting the title of your CD or import each song individually in the event you do not want to import them all.
hope this helps

I think you mean the Amazon Kindle. It's not made by Apple, though. I don't think Apple makes e-book readers.
