Ok I'm not a native speaker; therefore, I don't write very well in English. I can understand and know what people are talking about...but..again..it is not my language so I end make a lot of mistakes in grammar and sentence structure. Basically, when I take classes in my major. I think they are very easy, because, the ways they organize, the formulas, and formats of Accounting methods are straight to the point. When I take any class is related to English such as business law course then most of the time I have difficulties in writing a long essay. I know other people have suggested me to read books; however, I'd like you know what are the best methods to practice to a better understanding in English grammar? Do you know any websites that sell cds or audio lectures?
The reason I'm asking this question, because I don't want any people make fun of me about my English.
Your English isn't bad - don't let people try to make fun of you for it... at least you're making an effort, which is more than a lot of people can say for themselves. English really is a difficult language to grasp. By the way you write, it looks like you understand English perfectly well, but are just hesitant to write in it because you are afraid of what people will think of it.
I used to work as a writing tutor at my college, and the only advice I can really offer to a non-native speaker is to immerse yourself in the language and start "thinking" in the language. I did this when I learned Spanish, and it worked.
Once you become more able to process your thoughts in English, writing in it will come naturally to you. It's rather difficult to think in one language and attempt to translate it into another language in your writing. The more you write, the more confident you will become.
As a writing tutor I never referred to grammar books unless the student had a specific question, or I noticed that he or she was consistently making the same grammatical error.
Oh - a final suggestion: keep a journal, if you have the time. Write in it a couple of days out of the week in English. It doesn't matter what you write about, just write anything to make yourself more comfortable with the language. This way you'll be able to strengthen your writing skills without the fear of someone criticizing it. If you keep up with it, you'll probably be able to look back and see how much your English improves over the time that you write in it.
Hope this helps!

Hi everybody! I'm Italian and I want to study Aussie english (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, slang, ...). Can you suggest me a good book to learn it? I've got the Macquarie dictionary of slang, but I was searching for something about the Aussie speaking accent (possibly a textbook course with the audio CD recorded by an australian speaker)...
Thank you very much!
These should help.

My child started primary school with very limited English because we did not speak English at home. It took her 4 years to match up with the best of native English speakers. Currently she is right at the top in some aspects of English and near the top in some other aspects. Her good progress is due to the extra help and encouragement I gave her at home. I gave her extra grammar work, help with vocabulary, audio books and watching movies with her.
But I know my limit. I am fluent at English but I am not a native English speaker. My English can never be effective as a comparable native English speaker. At some point I won't be of help to her in English. It shows when I try to help her with poetry. I suppose it could be argued that she is good now at end of grade 3. She should be Ok on her own. But I think her high performance will drop back as the public school does not really cater for high performing kids.
What should I do?
Great inputs! As she got the benefit of speaking a little English at the start of her Kindy year, her problem was more about competing with top kids. Her worst subject is English. And she is currently almost matching with top kids in English (after lagging behind for 3 years!). Clearly it's about wanting the best for her and to do justice for her intellect.
In her K and year 1, her teachers did not teach phonics. Luckily I saw that and taught her a bit of phonics. Lots of ethnnic people beleive that the only way is to hire native English tutors to help. So far we resist that idea on the basis of cost and also about play time. We like to give her a lot of play time as childhood never comes back if one looses it. Learning with a parent is fun and flexible. Having a tutor costs money and it all becomes formal (justifying the cost for value).
HI, I am a recenlty retired elem teacher and I found that children who have English not as their native tongue always struggle with language writing issues. If you study how infants learn sounds etc , it is proven that some things learned in those early years are hard to over come. Look at people who keep their accents all their lives even tho they came to the US when they were younger. It is the brain programmed. I would suggest you get someone who has English as their native tongue to help. It sounds like you are doing GREAT, really great, but if you want the best for the child, you need to get someone to help whose native tongue is English, the roles would be reversed if we were in a foreign country. it is all about the brain programming in infancy etc.
My english has a heavy french accent.{maybe the grammar too}.I always try my best to improve the pronounciation, but it's a bit hard because I have not enough money to attend the english class, furthermore,I have to work on my chinese language; My english vocabulary is average, but the main problem is the good pronounciation?can I settle this down with some free online courses?is there any website that You guys could suggest me? If yes, please send me a link,I'll be grateful. It could also be a book with an audio CD that I can find round here in a bookstore in Beijing or any other helpful suggestion.
P.S:I have tried the BBC website before, but Ithink it's more british than american.thank you for your understanding.
Ouais. Si tu veux apprendre la prononciation américaine, BBC n'est pas l'endroit. Je te recommende que tu vas apprender l'alphabet API (IPA en anglais), et apprender de prononcer correctement avec ça. Pour apprendre l'alphabet, tu devrais visiter Wikipedia.
Vraiment, ce va t'aider.
Hello, Im in my late teens, a fluent English speaker and have begun to learn French off an audio course (Berlitz New Basic French Audio course). By the time Im done I should know basic French, as in, greetings, introductions, spelling and alphabet, numbers days and dates, and all the basic conversation needed for eating out, shopping, holding a conversation and small talk, discussing professions, workplaces, and family life, finding my way around town, making plans, opening and closing times, shopping for a variety of goods, choosing clothing, size and colour, comparing items, methods of travel, using public transportation, and renting a car.
So now knowing that much basic French, I'd like to learn more French by reading French books which are simple enough for me to be able to grasp the basics of most of the sentences- not complicated enough for me to get lost with only my basic knowledge of French or to not understand whole sentences, but not so simple that it wouldn't help me improve my French at all. I plan on using a French dictionary and grammar book as reference when reading these French books, to improve my French with them.
So does anyone have any reccomendations on reasonably long (~100-180 pages would be good, not too short and not too long) French books of the said amount of simplicity/complexity?
Books completely in French or in French with a little bit of English are good, and while books in French with English translation may also be helpful however I'm afraid that the English translations may achieve the 'subtitle effect' and that I may unconsciously read mainly from the subtitles to get the story.
Thank you.
you do not need any book but a good web site to learn french
so you google "la grammaire de l'absurde" for the grammar
they explain anything about French with the English translation
you have also the mp3s and pdfs available to download to your pc
all is free of charge
