There are plenty of sinners and saints with stories of compassion and cruelty. Using council records, diaries, and firsthand descriptions, Dee Brown gives voice to those who experienced the events first hand. This is a seminal work that changed the perception of this time period.   This is a book I first read many years ago; my interest came from my husband having grown up on a ranch near the Pine Ridge reservation where Wounded Knee Creek flows.  I decided to revisit the book when the excellent audio CD, read by Grover Gardner, was released in October. I am glad I did.  Fundamentally, this is the story of two cultures who could not understand each other, locked in struggle for control of the land.  The result was fear.  Whether or not you like history, this is a haunting story and well worth a visit or a revisit.
