I would assume so, Hurricane Katrina not being around then.
Recorded on October 30, 2011 US State Dept purchases $70000 worth of Obama's Books to distribute throughout the world in US Embassies.
Let me start by saying that I supported Barack Obama for presidency and I am now listening to his memoir Dreams from My Father which is prompting me to ask this question.
In the book Barack Obama talks about anti-miscegenation laws.. his father & mother had an interracial relationship that was frowned upon by some of society in that day and age (and also illegal in many states.) It bothers me that he can't see the parallel between these laws and gay marriage.
Perhaps he actually does support gay marriage but it's far too controversial of a position for him to take on. Seeing that he didn't support Prop 8 leads me to believe this but it could just be my wishing.
Gay marriage laws are the anti-miscegenation laws of today. 40 years from now, society will look upon this basic denial of human rights in the same way we look upon anti-miscegenation laws today. I predict a Supreme Court case for gay marriage like Loving v. Virginia will be ruled in the favor of human rights before the states vote to give everyone the freedom they deserve.
(in case you are wondering about my perspective, I am a straight white male. I would like to know what everyone else thinks on this issue and what perspective you are looking at this from.)
Thanks for the rant. Marriage has a religious connotation. Obama doesn't support gay marriage. He does think states could offer civil unions. And?
If someone talks about their name in their own autobiography, how is it a right wing smear to ask about it?
same reason that you are supposedly a racist for voting for mccain-guess black voters who vote for mccain would be self loathing-according to this type of bs logic
I personally believe Barack Obama is a Christian. When right wingers suggest he is a Muslim I've always pointed out "this won't help us defeat him in the election" but I am ignored and they drone on about him being a Muslim.
In this question one of the answers suggests that these facts come from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh,

But, didn't the President in his books say that his father was a Muslim, and his step dad?
(I'll give you a hint cause I read them - yes)
What difference does it make whether he did or not. His religion is irrelevant.
He even wrote a book about his father. Never says much about the ones who raised him, mama and grands.
Obama is half black and half white but the only important part of him is his black half.
tuaregontherun.com » The Barack Obama Effect on Black Men
When I was a boy, I would overhear older black men talking about this evil, mythical figure called “The Man.” I thought there was Batman, Spiderman, Superman, and The Man.
The Man was accused of selfishly hoarding power and resources that prevented black men from getting jobs, owning businesses, and having greater opportunities in general. As a young impressionable child, The Man seemed like one bad mutha. It took me some time for me to figure out that The Man was the white man.
As humorous and antiquated as this notion may be, it surprises me that The Man still lives in the minds of many black men today. After listening to Barack Obama make his presentation at the Democratic National Convention, which coincided with the 45th anniversary of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, there is a palpable energy, optimism, and pride that I’m sensing in my conversations with other black men. An awakening that’s almost spiritual. A fertile synergy that can produce the seeds of a movement – a black male movement.
