Are you supposed to listen to an audio book while reading?

Hey guys,

I am reading Shakespeares 'Hamlet' and I got this excellent audio book for it. This is the first time using one. And so is the proper way to read while listening to the audio book (i have the audio book on my ipod) or is it you either read or use the audio book? For the best memorization of details do you recommend good old reading or audio books or does it depend on the person?

I think most people do either one or the other, read or listen, but I think it would be really beneficial to do both at the same time, as you'll probably get a better understanding of the book.

Are audio books a substitute for reading an actual book?
Currently reading

In your opinion, do you gain the same thing from an audio book, or does reading the actual book offer something more? Explain.

Thank you

I personally get more out of reading the book myself. However, you have to remember that some people are blind, then there are people who just don't have time to read (too busy) so they listen while they drive, and then you have podiobooks...some of them you can't find in print. Then again, audiobooks are good because the author can make sure that everything comes across just how he/she wants it too. But I like reading better. I can take my time, go back and look things up, and go at my own pace.

What are the advantages and disadvantages in listening to an audio book versus reading a book?

Well, sir, you are likely to hear a variety of answers to this, as I'm certain you're aware. It's as much an opinion question as anything.

First, of course, we're assuming that the audio books are unabridged.

There is incredible convenience in having a voice read a book to you. It allows us to multitask, which can be good and bad, in that often we tend to give the book half our attention.

Perhaps the best place to begin is to ask you sir, what do you read, and why do you read it? i ask this because the purpose you have in reading helps to determine which type of book might be best for you. For example, some people have to read a particular book for a class, and must get the info in their head as easily as possible. In such a situation, an audio book does little harm.

But then, there are situations that I run into as a true bibliophile. A reader on a tape or disc is making decisions for me in speaking and intoning the words and phrases of my book. A reader reading aloud has an awful lot of power in depicting mood, in establishing character, and there's something to the enegy of each person's voice that establishes a tone for the entire reading experience. Frankly, I find that too much to bear. I want the right in establishing a relationship with a book on my own terms, if you know what I mean. Is it enough to see the Mona Lisa on a website? For some it is. But for others, they desire to view that shy smile with their own two eyes.

Is listening to an audio book the same as reading the book?
Curious George Color Fun LeapFrog TAG Junior

I don't always have time to enjoy my passion of reading. I would like to "read" books while at work or driving in the car.
I sometimes feel like cheating but I do try to look for the unadbridged version.

Audiobooks are wonderful for the busy lives we lead nowadays! I've recently begun listening to them while I work, and love them! I was a voracious reader when I was younger, but as an adult with my own business I always felt guilty sitting down and just reading a book. But with audiobooks I can mow the lawn, wash dishes, drive a car--and "read" a book at the same time! Multi-tasking is wonderful! Television rarely gets turned on anymore....I have my books! check your local library for audiobooks, and Audible.com for downloadable books for CD or MP3.

It’s a great joy with the coming of audio books; learning has been made a lot easier. Apart from reading for the sake of acquiring knowledge, reading for fun and entertainment has now been made a lot easier with the coming of audio books. The fact that most people can now “listen” to their favorite book instead of spending the time to sit and carefully read it, so much love have now been spread about audio books. That’s why many book titles now come in audio book format as well as physical book format. If you look at it closely, for someone who used to spend hours reading a normal book, that same person can still “listen” to that book while commuting to and fro work — thereby saving a huge amount of time per book. It’s not just the extra time one would save, one would also gain a lot of knowledge from the audio book as well. That’s obviously why both children, adults and even the aged can’t help but listen to audio books instead of reading the normal physical books. Also, aside from other advantages of audio books, they are much more easier to produce and distribute than paperback and hardcover books. Audio books also help to conserve nature than hardcover and paperbacks; another big advantage. For many people, the best reason why they love audio books is that they can do their household chores while still enjoying an educational or entertaining audio book, unlike a hardcover or paperback book where they have to stop what they are doing to read it. While you can’t read a normal hardcover or paperback book in the dark, with an audio book you can listen even in the dark; this is so far one of the most powerful advantages of audio book. Finally, from the many advantages you have seen above about audio books, what are you still waiting for before getting your hands on your own copies?
