Manuscript typist and audio book reader jobs?
New Kindle! Kindle 2 Arrives

I typed one manuscript for an author and had a great time. I wonder if anyone has ideas on how to find out if there are more authors out there that need typists and how do I find a company that prepares audio books? I've been told I have a great reading voice and I have years of experience in public speaking. Do I contact a publisher or how do I go about this. I've checked with local employment agencies and they don't have a clue. Thanks.

Besides typing manuscripts, if you are an accomplished typist - word processor and have recently visited your local city college or university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects. An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days work.

Good luck!

Do you have a favorite book on tape or CD? A favorite audio-book reader?

"Cadillac Beach" by Tim Dorsey narrated by George Wilson is a laugh riot for adults only. Well that's not exactly true, but the large amount of violence, sex, and drug use is not for young listeners. Eccentric Serge A. Storms is on a quest to find his grandfather's murderer and the stolen gems that were the reason for the death. Nothing will stop Serge, not the sanitarium, not the hired hitmen, not the sports reporter Serge kidnaps, and certainly not his plans to invade Cuba. Wild and crazy does not even begin to cover this whirlwind tour of Miami. Think of "Cadillac Beach" as a cross between Dave Barry and Hunter S. Thompson then kick it just shy of Thompson in the spectrum.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is excellent, but only when read by C.J. Critt. There has been a re-recording of the series narrated by Lorelei King and, frankly, she can't cut it. King's voice is dead and boring compared to Critt's energy and range of voices. Stephanie Plum is the newest bond enforcement agent in Trenton and is starting to make a name for herself as the Terror of Trenton. Start with "One For The Money" (the darkest of the series-the rest are lighter and much more fun) on the Recorded Books LLC versions. Critt also performs wonderfully on Evanovich's "Metro Girl" and "Motor Mouth."

Donald Westlake's Dortmunder series is another one that has translated to audio well. Westlake has developed the Dortmunder series into a genre all its own-the comedic crime caper. The series is read by Michael Cramer who has an incredible range of voices. "Drowned Hopes" is by far the magnus opus of the series, but the others should not be ignored. Look for "Why Me?", "Good Behavior", "Bad News" and "Don't Ask." The earlier novels "The Hot Rock", "Bankshot", and"Jimmy The Kid" show their age a bit, but are still fun reads (or in this case, listens).

Why would you be a good story narrator (or audio book reader)?

...or what would disqualify you for such a job?

I do narrate for my daughter and of course read to her endlessly, but with my unique childlike voice that I had to learn to deepen I would be a better animated film voice-over.

How do I become a reader for an audio book company?

I would guess you would have to get yourself an agent as a voice actor.

  • Reader Review: “Shutter Island”

By Raffie : Shutter Island is one of the best book I have ever read in my life (and I have been averaging a book every two-three days for 33 years now). The characters are so real the reader feels for them; the plot is magnificent; the end is unpredictable and ties everything up beautifully. I enjoyed this book so much I will recommend it to friends and family. If you want a book that will stay with you long after reading the last page, go for Shutter Island! You won't be disappointed. =)
