So i've been a loyal windows user for nearly 5 years, but i think i might take the jump over to mac.
My question is this, why is the mac better than pc for audio engineering/production? Is it really better? Or did mac just inandate the music/video industry with macs so that the industry standard nowadays is mac?
thankyou.
The Mac was initially the only choice when it came to a computer for artists/musicians because it was the primary platform that software developers targeted. This is mostly historic due to the Mac emerging as the first mainstream & affordable graphics user interface. The artist/musician community became very comfortable with the Mac as it supported the applications they used for their creative endeavors. As they say, first is better than better. Of course, the Mac was a very nice platform which gave them little reason to move from as software developers for the arts (Adobe, Digidesign/ProTools, Macromedia, Quark) began to take the PC platform seriously.
My answer is that either platform will give you the tools to do whatever you desire artistically. Most professional recording studios will be Mac centric so if your work will need to be sent out to someone else (other graphic artists, sound engineers, etc.) then they will most likely also have Macs. While the data files used by these software apps are typically the same between both platforms it will be easier to share info if both users are on the same platform (of course, if you are technically adept then it is easy doing cross-platform work).
The story changes quite a bit if you consider the Mac desktop Mac Pro as this system will support up to 32GB of memory while the prevalent versions of Windows (XP, Vista) are 32-bit systems and will only support 3GB. You can go to the 64-bit versions of these Windows operating systems but you will encounter issues with many other important apps (Adobe Flash being one of them). The next version of Windows (7) will most likely be only a 64-bit OS so the playing field will be more level as once you switch to a 64-bit Windows OS memory expansion increases to 128GB. Apps such as Photoshop and Pro Tools need as much memory as you can give to them to offer the highest performance.
The one big downside to a Mac is that Apple prices their machines as a single-source manufacturer would - high! You can always get a more powerful system for less money if you buy a PC platform (memory, disk space, processor speed).

I currently use Fruity Loops 5 and am wondering what it would take to teach myself how to master audio production and what tools (hardware and software) I would need to get started. Any books and advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks, Mike L. I have both programs and am planning to mixdown both my albums using it...but I was wondering about what would separate me from professional audio mixing. Can I really do that w/ loops and audacity?
Well this is not necessarily a programming and design question but I'll have a go at it...
I played with Fruity Loops for a while (got a trial version on a CD that came with a magazine).
To get your feet wet in audio production, try ACID Express, fron Sony. It's a free version of a commercial loop-based audio package (and you will soon find you will want the features that are in the paid versions, but try the free one first). The Express edition is limited to ten tracks, so to build complex mixes without buying the paid version you may end up rendering multiple tracks to a single new track.
You can get ACID Express online.. it's a large download, though, so be prepared. http://www.acidplanet.com
Under tools you will find the link to get the software. You will also be able to download weekly "8 packs", free loops and a sample project. In fact, the 8-packs page also has thelink to download ACID Express.
There's another free audio editor called Audacity which you can find easily online. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
I sometimes pick up a magazine imported from the UK called Computer Music, which often gives away software, loops, etc on the CD, and the pages contain lots of ifo on music production from beginner level to expert.
Hope this helped.
Or has the nation's switch to frugality, especially among young people, ended their production?
Or has the present state of the economy ended their production?
Can we still purchase them or is that ending in favor of libraries?
Actually, they are probably increasing in availablility. Due to technological advances, it is probably cheaper and faster to make an audio book now than in the past. Since most are sold on CD's, and with the growing popularity of mp3 formats, audio books are everywhere - I have even seen them available on flash drives. They can be downloaded from Amazon, Audible and many other sites as well as being purchased online and in traditional book stores and retailers. I actaully see more variety of available titles from self-help, psyschology, biography and other non-fiction titles to all kinds of fiction (thrillers, romance, horror, sci-fi and mystery). Also, the quality of production has greatly improved over the last several years.
Since many people spend a lot of time in cars and on the go, and many of these people carry mp3 players and iPods, audio books are a good way to pass the time for people that don't get a lot to read.
Although they are still a little more expensive than a paper book, they often also provide entertainment value above the story itself, so many people are willing to spend a little extra for these, as well. Besides, many titles are available at libraries (some are even available online through libraries) so they can be gotten for free.

Audio Book Production & Choices | www.publetariat.com
As promised, here is a post on audio books. Have you ever priced audio books in comparison to printed versions? Mass market=$8-10, Trade Paperback=$15-20, Hardback=$22-30, Abridged audio=$26-40, and Unabridged audio=$35-60. Why are audio books on CDs so much more expensive? Production costs.
First, there is the different cover and packaging. Then comes the cost of the pressed CDs (analogous to printing). Finally, there are the costs of recording, which consist of: using a professional recording studio with all its expensive equipment, its talented engineers and producers, talented reader(s) capable of smooth readings and producing different character voices consistently.
All this is very expensive! Having been a studio musician and been involved in recorded book-like projects as far back as 1966, I’ve had the opportunity to personally experience both the music and the reader sides of the process. For these reasons, I decided to go with Hudson Audio, an internationally based company out of Australia. They charge a very reasonable setup fee of $285, which is taken out of earned royalties. Their site is http://www.hudsonaudiopublishing.com/ and they take the pain out of much of the process. Technology has gotten to the point where CDs are not absolutely necessary. Newer model cars have plugins in their dashes to accommodate ipods. Ipods and similar devices are to the audio world as e-book readers are to the e-book world. Both can download electronic files to play at their leisure. Doing away with CDs is like doing away with printing books. That makes the production process much cheaper.
