My mother has failing eyesight but she used to really love reading. She does enjoy listening to talking books. But all the websites I have seen charge a hefty subscription fee. I want to know where I can download well known, new and best seller books from please?
I wouldn't mind paying a small fee if the website was a really good, well recommended one. with a great selection of best sellers and classic book.
Many thanks.
Gaz.
I have a different suggestion. Your local library should have many books on tape/cd. If you have a cassette or cd player.

Today is payday and I really want it, but they don't have it on Itunes, allthough they have everyone else's book. I went to Walmart, and all they had was John McCain's book. I couldn't even find Ron Pauls book in print?!! I thought it was a best seller? Where are people buying it from if it's such a best seller? I want it today, so I would prefer to download it from the internet. Is there a good audio book site that I can purchase it from?
Thanks!
This link gets you to the Audio CD.
Obviously, that won't fit in your ipod. But, someone might be able to kluge together some sort of mp3 that would, I don't know.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961, to Barack Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham. His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student. His mother was from heartland-of-the-U.S. Kansas, and his father from Kenya. Barack's parents eventually divorced, and after his mother remarried, he lived in Indonesia for a time before returning to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. He later moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.
True to the values of empathy and service that his mother instilled in him, Barack put law school on hold after college and moved to Chicago, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group that was dedicated to improving living conditions in poor neighborhoods. For example, helping poor people work with service agencies to get their plumbing and heating fixed and to find jobs for unemployed. It was here that he realized it would take changes in our laws and politics to truly improve the lives of the people in these impoverished neighborhoods. A little known but impressive fact is that when Barack applied to Harvard Law School, he did not even indicate his race on his Harvard application.
Barack earned his law degree from Harvard in 1991, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. He then returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law. His advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years beginning in 1996. While in the Illinois State Senate, Barack served as chairman of the Public Health and Welfare Committee. In 2004, well into his U.S. Senate campaign, Barack wrote and delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, and became a rising star in U.S. politics. A few months later, he was elected to the U.S. Senate with a landslide 70% of the vote. Four months into his senate career, Time magazine named him "one of the world's most influential people," calling him "one of the most admired politicians in America." Barack formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election in Springfield, Illinois on February 10, 2007.
Barack is also an accomplished author. His 1995 book, Dreams from My Father, is a memoir of his youth and early career. The book was reprinted in 2004 with a new preface and an annex containing the text of his 2004 Democratic Convention keynote speech. The audio book edition earned Barack the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
In December 2004, Barack signed a contract to write three more books. The first, The Audacity of Hope, was published in October 2006. The book has remained at or near the top of the New York Times Best Seller list since its publication. It was also the theme of his 2004 keynote address. The second book will be a children's book to be co-written with his wife Michelle and their two daughters, with profits going to charity. The content of the third book has yet to be announced.
In August 2008, Barack was nominated by the Democratic party as their candidate to be President of the United States. Barack selected long-time and well-respected U.S. Senator Joe Biden as his running mate.
Wow - what is this? A Book Report about the virtues of Obama? Are you trying to convince those of us who didn't want this guy in the White House that he should be there?
We don't like this guy because he is trying to turn us into a socialist country. He has an agenda to bring about the New World Order (and so did Bush). He lies about so many things, and then pats himself on the back and gives himself a B+ for his time in office. All you gotta do it check out some of the things he has said IN HIS OWN WORDS to know this guy is someone we don't want in the WHITE HOUSE. Just go to youtube.......tons of videos to check out.
Truly, the only great thing he has done so far as president was to give the OKAY for the navy seals to kill the pirates who were holding one of our ship captains hostage.
This man has never had a real job. He was a community organizer before he got into politics. He has surrounded himself with czars who don't have to answer to anyone but himself. These people are crazy, left-wing loons who are self-avowed communists, marxists, socialists, etc. One of these crazy people even stated how much they look up to Mao Tse Tung! These people have an AGENDA to destroy the country as we know it.
YOU ALL BETTER WAKE UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!
I’m an unpublished author working on my first book. I’m in my 40s, have a family and a full time job, so I must write in my spare time. I'm also an avid and almost obsessive, reader, something I think is a "must" for a writer. I came up with the idea for my novel in 2005 and have spent considerable time plotting, researching and writing.
Last year I completed the first draft of my book, a thriller novel, in some ways comparable to the works of Dan Brown. My first draft is about 725 double-spaced pages in MS Word, about 200,000 words. I’m currently working on my second draft, although a few of the early chapters, I have revised and polished many times so that I may share those portions with others. I believe, and those close friends who have read my opening chapters have concurred, that my book is excellent and that it is best-seller material, assuming that I continue on the road I’m on and finish the book, and that I get the right agent and publisher so that my book gets the advertising and promotion it deserves. Naturally, my time constraints make the writing a slow process.
I have no experience in selling a book, nor have I ever published anything other than letters to the editors on the opinion page of newspapers.
My questions are these:
1. The premise of my novel, the idea itself, is a natural. I’m nervous about letting my idea out, that a fast writer might steal the idea and write their own novel based on my idea. I find the idea that is the basis of my book so intuitive, I’m surprised no one has written a book with this premise before. To protect the idea itself, should I copyright my rough draft? The draft is very unpolished, something I do not want others to read. If I copyright it, will anyone (besides a clerk in the copyright office) be able to read my embarrassing, unpolished first draft? Can I write a short synopsis and copyright that, to protect my idea? Or do I need a finished, polished version before I copyright?
2. Do I need to have a final, polished version of the entire book, before I start looking for an agent? How much should I have, finished and polished, before I start looking for an agent? Where do you suggest I begin looking for an agent?
3. Someone I know recommended that, even before I seek an agent, I reserve a URL and create a website for my book, and that I also publish an audio pod-cast of the beginning of the book, as a “teaser” to bring interest to my book, even before seeking an agent or publisher. Good idea or bad, and why?
Thanks...
Charlie
To paraphrase... somebody... I would have made this message shorter, if I had more time. :-)
Several have said, they will think I do not trust them. I know a person who sent their book to a publisher. It was later published, with minor modification, under another name. Fact: I do not trust them.
I need not necessarily even tell the publisher I've copyrighted the book, unless they can discover that fact by other means, or unless my book is stolen, in which case, the copyright can be the means by which I can take them to court.
Second point, I've read that the "poor man's copyright" doesn't hold up in court. You can mail yourself an empty envelope, and later put anything you want in the envelope, seal it, and say, "See, this was my work!"
Charlie,
Congrats on your book in progress. I too am a writer in my 40's and have gone through this very same thing.
First, about protecting your material. Here is a cheap, easy way to do it. Mail a copy of the draft to yourself, certified mail, receipt requested with a seal that is obvious and cannot be opened without damaging the package. When you receive the package, DO NOT OPEN IT. Leave it sealed and store it in a safe place. Should you ever need, you can prove, backed by the government (USPS) that you had this idea and were working on it by this date. If it ever came to it, you would simply open the envelope in court in front of a judge.
Second. You do not need a final copy of the manuscript to search out publishers. The fact is, they don't want it. They want a letter from you telling them what the story is about and why they should publish it. They also want to know that you have published things before (chickien/egg paradox) Unfair? Absolutely. Difficult hurdle to overcome? You bet. But you have to see their side. If they didn't do it this way they would get millions of lousy manuscripts a year and would waste all their time reading lousy work. So how do you ever get published? Good question. There are several ways. You could possibly get some other work published first in a local magazine that is always looking for articles (not what you do, I know, but I'm trying to help). You could also look into "self-publishing" but that is a double edged sword. You have to pay to get it published (a couple hundred bucks usually) and sell it yourself on a web site, but these "vanity" publishers do not have a great reputation in the literary world.
If you can, positive endorsements from acedemics helps in your letter. Get copies to local professors or other professional writers and see if you can get reviews that you can submit.
As far as getting an agent, that's almost as hard as getting a publisher. They only want to represent people who have proven they can sell books. Again, chicken/egg.
Good luck friend.
If you like, I would be happy to converse with you and help in any little way I can. I too love the genre. I know you don't know me from Adam, but we are kindred.
