Abridged Audio Book

i see a discrepancy with the length of the audio books anyone can shine a little more light on this .......THANKS

Unabridged audio (or print, for that matter) books contain every word in the original version--and they're the only way to go.

The abridged version will have the same general story, but a great deal of text will be missing, some of it essential for understanding why characters behave as they do. It's edited for the sake of shorter running time.

Does anybody know why publisher are doing Abridged version of audio Book? I do not understand why they would do that.It is weird to say to an author i love your book but i just want to buy part of the book not the full version

A shorter version is cheaper to record and later for people to buy. Also lots of people buy them who have never read the book that is on the recording and don't realize what abridged means.

Hey everyone, I need some help. I'm thinking about buying an audio book from itunes and I wanted to buy The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. I'm in the mood for something sappy. =) Anyway, I was wondering if there is a big difference between getting the abridged or unabridged version. I've googled it and all I was given is that abridged audio books are edited down to the bare essentials of the book, meaning only parts of the book that are of value to the story, while an unabridged audio book is the entire book. Help me out! Has anyone compared an unabridged version of a book to an abridged version? Thanks!

I read the book, but I haven't compared them. I believe to get the full range of emotions/feelings you probably need more than just the essentials. I can't think of too many parts that could be cut out as being "non-essential".

I recently downloaded the audio book "Star Wars: Courtship of Princess Leia" from iTunes and saw that it was abridged.
Looking at the rest of the audio books on iTunes I saw that all of the star wars books are abridged.
Why is that?

Many audio books, not just Star Wars audio books, are released in an abridged format to condense material to a suitable length.

Novels are supposed to be read silently to oneself, which is generally faster than reading aloud. To release a complete version of the novel in audio form would likely last over 20 hours and therefore be very expensive to both the publisher to produce and the consumer to purchase, so instead the publisher will remove anything from small references to entire scenes which are considered superfluous, i.e. they do not move the story along.

Can somebody tell me what the difference between unabridged and abridged audio books is?

Abridged works are shortened versions of the original unabridged books. For the most part, if a book is abridged it will leave out much of the narrator's comments and detail. Abridged works don't have the elaborate description of characters, setting, and plot details. You don't get the full sense of a scene because you don't have the description. Abridged works don't really cut out the plot, just a good deal of the detail that makes a book believable.
