A New Earth Audio Book

I had a chance to listen to Eckhart Tolle's audio book entitled "The New Earth". I listened to a couple of chapters where he says that if you don't understand his viewpoint, then you are somehow not enlightened, I listened and understood what he said perfectly well but I didn't agree with him. Now with Oprah behind him pushing this down her viewers throats, I was curious how other people felt about it, and why they feel the way they do.
To be clear, I have never hated Oprah on a personal level, I just feel that she is transforming from talk show host to a "new age" televangelist and this makes her show almost unbearable for me personally to watch.

I think she went down hill a very long time ago. It's not like all that money wasn't ever gonna sink in. In her defence though she brings all the newest crap we would probably not otherwise hear about right out there for all to see. Remember the one about the husbands living on the down low? The people who watch her aren't being forced to so keep that in mind. Oprah 2000 years from now with all followers she has. She will be thought of as the second coming. No really I think it's between her and Madonna....

I just finished reading this book in its entirety, and it sounds to me like he's trying to take advantage of people by using big words and telling them he can help them find their "inner purpose," when really all he's doing is saying that thoughts are bad because they're caused by the ego and we need to shut them down. Since shutting off your thoughts is impossible, he's offering seminars and books and audio tapes to people for large sums of money so he can "help" them achieve this and become rich in the process. I think it sounds like he's trying to lead a cult because once people shut out their positive and negative thoughts, they'll be susceptible to give him more money and do whatever he tells them to. Then he can tell anyone who disagrees with him that they're just letting their "pain body" take over. Did anyone else get this message out of the book?

I would definitely question his sincerity, particularly if, as you say, he is selling his concepts through seminars, tapes, and DVDs. I have not read the book. I think, though, that it might be the one which Oprah chose for her on-line seminar with the author. I would be wary of anyone who tries to manipulate my thought processes! There are, in my opinion, far too many writers posing as authorities in psychology and other mind matters while lacking the credentials. If you distrust the author, do not invest any further in his offerings. As in all such instances, the person with the original idea will be the one who becomes rich at the expense of those who are seeking "enlightenment"!

I have been an atheist for about 10 years now and have started to come to the conclusion that conventional religion and spirituality may not serve a purpose as an actual explanation for the universe, it does however provide something that we as a species seek out intrinsically. I can't imagine what other reason could there be for it's pervasiveness in every culture throughout history?

Now that I'm older and free of the indoctrinated dogma I was born into when I was younger, I think it is possible to take a functional approach to spirituality. For me it's unlikely that this could be Christianity, Islam, or any of the more main stream spirituality. I'm not seeking rules so much as an inner peace, silly as the feels to say.

I have liked much of what I've heard of Buddhism. While I found the notion of reincarnation challenging to accept initially, I was encouraged when I heard that not all sects teach that notion. Not only that but, in a way the notion in physics that energy cannot be destroyed could be a form of reincarnation in and of itself. The electrical energy in my brain and body. Etc.

ANYway I've downloaded numerous texts and audio books (buddhism for beginners) but have hit a couple of stumbling blocks right out of the gates. First is how so much of what I have heard so far just strikes me as simple Altruism. "The Path of Compassion" - "The Path of Generosity." These concepts are functional to being a good person. Is this supposed to be a revelation to me?

The second this bias I've discovered to some of the various "Personalities" that this seems to attract. A number of the audio books I've tried sound like they're being read by new-age hippy self-hypnosis guru's. Slow, deep voices trying to get you to relax. It reeks of in-authenticity to me. I'd rather have a stand up comic giving me the low down than these people.

Isn't there a good place to start for simple down to earth instruction that speaks to my intellect rather than this squishy hippy-dippy stuff?

Over 2,500 years Buddhism has evolved into a multiplicity of spiritual traditions. Some appear quite religious, others appear more like science.

What these tradition share in common the Buddha's focus on how the mind creates suffering, and how to put an end to suffering.

Most, but not all, Buddhist traditions emphasize meditation practice as the method to work with the mind. After all, this is the method used by the Buddha himself to awaken to the truth about human life.

It's true that a lot of "new age" people get attracted to Buddhism. Most of these folks don't last very long. Buddhist practice doesn't offer much candy - just the hard work of getting to know oneself.

Fortunately, there are many Buddhist teachers who are quite down to earth, and very ordinary. And some Buddhist traditions (Zen, Insight) are also quite ordinary.

If you'd like to learn Zen meditation, here's a wonderful video that isn't exactly new-agey - just clear advice about how to sit in meditation:

If you'd like to learn more about compassion and other aspects of the Buddha's teaching, I recommend a short book, "It's Easier Than You Think" by Sylvia Boorstein. This book is anchored in the facts of everyday, modern life.

Genuine compassion isn't a nice feeling or an emotion. It's a way of acting in the world that reduces suffering for all people (including yourself). There are many fine teachers who *get* this point and not all of them have mellow voices. As an example, you might check out Noah Levine, who founded "Dharma Punx" and who wears a t-shirt that says "Meditate and Destroy."

Of course, there are many other excellent teachers, as well. In the end, the best place to start is to seek out an actual, flesh & blood teacher. If possible, go to a Buddhist center near you and practice with the folks there. Chances are good that you'll find the usual mix of crazy, generous, confused, enlightened, cranky, and thoughtful people. Just like each of us, at different points in our day.

In this case, what we mean by "scientific foreknowledge" is scientific information that was revealed in the Bible long before mankind discovered or verified it through extra-Biblical means. The only day in the entire life of the newborn that the blood clotting element prothrombin is that high is day eight. The best day for surgical procedure like circumcision is therefore day eight. Meteorology

The Jet Stream Ecclesiastes 1:6 935 BC First discovered by airmen during WW II. See more information here. But look here at Intellicast's current graphical representation of the jet stream and you'll see it matches the Bible's description very nicely. Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. At its peak it's 29,028 feet. Yet the Jet Stream exists from 32,800 and 164,100 feet. Since airplanes didn't' exist in 935 BC, how was the author of Ecclesiastes able to give such an accurate description of the jet stream? Keep in mind that Ecclesiastes was written AFTER all the upheaval of Noah's flood. It is likely that Mount Everest was not as high in 935 BC as it is today, making it even more unlikely that humans could have used mountains to have discovered the jet stream. This is the most thorough explanation of biblical facts I have seen. Good for you! There is also a book called "Science vs. Evolution" also known as the "Evolution Cruncher" which as the name implies, "crunches" this awful theory of evolution that has destroyed the moral values placed by God in our society. It proves that evolution is as farce and gives plenty of evidence of the existence of our Creator.
